I just switched around some driveshaft stuff on the Fubari, and for a while I'm using a 1330/1350 conversion U-joint.

It only comes in a grease-able version, AFAIK.

I have always used solids up to now.

So, I'm looking at my first zerk in about 40 years and asking myself, what do I need to buy in the way of grease guns to connect up?  Is there just one size of zerk?

There is effectively just one size. There are some other weird ones out there, the common being button head I believe, but if it looks like a standard grease zerk it is going to be the standard size.

This. I've never figured out how to successfully use one without getting far more grease all over myself and everything else, than inside the joint.

Zerk Fittings may be all the same But I have Had Many that would either NOT Go On or had a Heck of a Time Getting it Off. It May Be the Fitting on the Gun, But rarely does it (the Job) Come out Satisfactorily, I think some may be a Metric size Zerk or Gun End But I never seem to Have the right Combo. If the Gun Does go  on Cleanly Push it Down Hard and then Squeeze the Handle and be sure the Ends are Clamped in Place Because they will Blow off.

Sort of on topic, any advice for making zerks stay in place?

Specifically on a greaseable balljoint. The zerk on one of mine likes to unscrew regardless of how much I tighten it or full it with grease.

Ding the U Joint with a Sharp point Punch Right Beside the zerk.

Just blabbing here, really, but here goes. Poke the button in the zerks before putting the gun on them to get stuff moving. I bought a gun that has a one hand pump like this

I like it. A solid "hose " as pictured, can be nice, and the battery operated ones are nice for doing stuff like greasing industrial machines or semis.

We use pnumatic grease guns and the standard tip does not fit most greaseable U-joints. We use a slimmer adaptor for u joints.

I have memories of the spring loaded handle coming loose from the back end before I had the front end screwed onto a freshly loaded grease gun.

I think Zerks are pretty much all the same size. I have greased European, Japanese, and American cars all with the same gun. But I think there can be some deviations in size that amke some fitting more messy than others. And some fittings get plugged up, ensuring the grease will go everywhere but where you want.

This thread brings back fond memories of being the selected kid who got the job of hitting the 1,943 zerks on our family New Holland Model 66 bailer every haying season !!  Good times!

This sounds similar to my conundrum of never being able to get the cap off my loctite.

I have two guns. One with a hard pipe, one with a flex. The hard pipe is filled with marine grease for the boat trailer hubs and outboard engine pivots. The other has a good quality general purpose grease used in everything else.

This kit is a requirement. With these you can put grease in anything. Even u joints that are so tight you can't get a standard gun tip on it.

Also, don't buy a cheap gun. This is another item that is worth what you pay for it.

What's a good brand of grease gun?  I'm assuming HF doesn't cut it?  I'm looking at greasing my Toyota Sequoia's U joints soon... guess they're kind of a pain to reach.  I'd like a good recommendation for one that won't kill the bank that has a flexible hose.

Plews and Lincoln are both decent brands that aren't too expensive.

Thanks guys.  I ordered a Lincoln and I'll hope for the best.

In reply to Toyman01 :

As someone who was doing the biannual chassis and driveshaft lube on the Super Duty yesterday, that kit looks very relevant to my interests.  I was going to buy a needle adapter (with the blunt end) to grease the largely inaccessible zerks in the double cardan portion of the front driveshaft, but that kit might futureproof other greasing adventures.  smiley

Where pray tell would a person find such a thing?

Anyone have a grease gun or grease that doesn't constantly leak and drip oil?

I picked mine up at Northern Tool while it was on sale. I'd bet HF has them as well.

I've found this seems to depend more on the grease than the gun.  Some greases separate and drip oil more than others.
