Just asking...

I promise, if you watch this video series and truly absorb the techniques they share, you will know more than 60% of the other competitors.
When I was larger into autox'ing I owned a copy of this on VHS and would review it before every season.

:) If helmets were not required, and you were ballast in..., say 911 carrera targa with Rcomp rubber and a fast driver, the slalom would render you unconscious with a massive egg on the side of your noggin. The sport is that violent.

Yes and a simple DOT helmet is not sufficient. Must be Snell Foundation certified. Back to Snell 2000 is ok for autocross (Snell updates certifcations every five years). The helmet can cars a Snell SA (Special Applications - racing) rating or an M-rating (Motorcycle).
Since I am a local (based on listed location) who knows most of the local clubs what club(s) are you looking at running with?
all of the local clubs here (for autocross and rallycross) have loaners, but they're painted hot pink, so nobody will steal them. They're also pretty stinky (lots of people wearing them on hot days out in the sun = gross), and you look like a moron wearing them, lol.
Go to OGRacing.com and check out the helmets. You can pick up legal Bell and G-Force helmets for like $150 or less, well worth it.
I prefer open-face (much cooler at events in the summer). Full-face you really only need if you're doing trackdays.
if it's an R-comp convertible / extra wide tires ... then a full face is advisable ... tiny rocks will beat your face to hell and back if the course isn't super clean
I've finished a run and had a large handful of pebbles in my lap and scratches on my face shield
