The 1982 Daytona 500. Early in the race Bobby Allison got tapped and the rear bumper fell off. The Buicks were faster without them and he ran away from the rest of the field and won by a large margin. It happens at about the 5:25 mark. Bonus points for David Hobbs commentating.

That is SOP everywhere solid axles are used. You can get half a degree to a degree of camber before the axles start to complain, with the main issue being if you have a limited slip, the wobbling action at the side gears causes teh diff to not work as well.

Nowadays, you can buy axles for floaters that have barreled ends so you can get more camber. Think like a wobble extension for your ratchet, but on the splines.

That smells of "hey we're faster without the bumper, what happens if it falls off during the race?"

The way the bumper mounted air would get caught under it. Lose it and there is less drag and better handling.

I was thinking more of a NASCAR mandates we have a bumper if it "falls off" during a racing incident and we happen to go faster bending of the rules kinda deal.

From what I've heard from people the bumper was intentionally mounted poorly so that a fairly light tap would make it come off.

This past NASCAR season crews were pulling the skirts out in front of the rear wheels during pit stops for more downforce.

It also might have been responsible for Gordon's tire getting cut down and the resulting pit lane brawl.

The first time I heard about cambering live axles was Herb Adam's TransAm Tempest, maybe in SportsCar Graphic?

1)I was told a story about an isma supermodified where the rule was "4 wheels" but no one said there had to be two per side, so someone put three on the right and one on the left.

2) didn't toyota get in trouble for painting time release rocket fuel on the inside of the intake manifolds of nascar cars a while back?

Toyota didn't, but Michael Waltrip sure did. Cost Truex his sponsor and ride.
