Personally I'd want to start with an R3 just because it already has the good gears and the updated engine, but that's just me, as long as we're spending other peoples' money
Carbs and rallycross suck. Half of the reason I switched to EFI is because I got sick of all of the weird problems associated with the fuel glugging around when the car is slamming around like the Konami Code. (Up! Up! Down! Down! Left! Right! Left! Right! B* A** stalled! Start...). Granted, I did trade one set of problems for another one, but at least I could FIX the EFI problems.
Bonus for the FD is that you can rescue a car that some drift kid or stancer bought and broke because why maintain a car when you can park it on grass or whatever they do.

source some transmissions later non-US GTX transmissions with the purchase and this would be a great idea. When the stock one breaks you then have an amazing car. Might as well get the BPT too while your at it.
None of the GTX transmissions were worth a damn, USDM or not.
The GTR is stronger, but good luck finding one.
GTX is not on the list. Interesting cars, but no.
You could just buy Bobzilla's Accent

Good option.
I'll also have an MX6 GT to offload for cheap as soon as mndsm comes and gets the one that i built for him.

Buy a 4 door, they're $1000 or less in running, driving condition. Best combination of style and handling in the dirt. Plus tough as hell. I used to beat on my 2 door all day long at Rallycross events and then drive it home 3 hours. Had a b20 and 4.3 gears, with 195/65r15 rubber. 6500 rpm was just about 100 mph. That 2 liter four-banger sucking through dual carbs sounded great.
I thought you were going to come out to a WDCR rallycross? On event left, on November 10th for this season. Still about a dozen spots open. Sign up is on DLBracing.com. DO IT! I want to see this Amazon in action!

Once again, personal growth and maturity have gotten in the way of a good time.
I still have two rotary cars. I'm just trying to limit how much money I dump into Mazdas.
Volvo remains interesting, but Miata is now way out front, as SWMBO has hinted that she would like to drive a Miata if we got one.
Which means it might wind up being automatic.

I'm hoping to make the November one. October was too short a notice. My 2 door is currently engineless, and my wagon isn't set up for racing of any kind. I plan on bring my 4 door- which hadn't run since last winter. This weekend I pulled it out of mothballs, replaced the points, and it fired right up. Drove it around and everything seems good- except for a missing front suspension bushing. I should have that replaced this week. Hopefully I'll see you on Sunday!

Heck we ran a full day of Lemons with NO suspension bushing in the front end. That's no excuse!

When I used to rallyx more often (DRSCCA) there was a guy out there in an older Foxbody Mustang that looked like he was having a blast. I vote RWD even if it isn't the fastest thing out on the dirt.

Yeah, but this 4 door is my winter beater. So I kinda want it all bushinged up for street use, too.

Oh I was speaking in jest. I remember it well. Slam the brakes, wait for the rattling and darting back-and-forth to stop, then turn in.
Starion/Conquest.
Cheap, stout, and parts are becoming easier to find. They just scream rally car.
I owned an '89 TSI SHP optioned Conquest, wicked fun and cheap car. I pushed 20lbs of boost on the stock bottom end. That car was a beast and surprised a lot of people. Nobody knew what it was, and I loved the confused looks and "nice Porsche" comments.
I saw that Mustang Turbo. I think there is a reason it hasn't sold yet.
What is super tempting is that M30, but for a street car. Wow.

Those were fun times. Would it oversteer? Would it understeer? Would it steer...period?
I'm sad that car has gone to the great smelter in the sky, but it had one foot in the grave the day I dragged it home. Man, what a pile. What a great LeMons car!

Yeah that M30 with the right bits and pieces would be amazing.

lemme guess
turbo + lack of intercooler + poor 80's cooling system = a lotta popped headgaskets?
