No really! Berkeley hinges. Client brought me a complete set of worn out hinges off a Berkeley Sport. I took them apart, built jigs to hold them in the mill and machined and reamed them for a larger 7/32" pin. I also replaced all the broken and rusty studs before sending them out to be chromed

This morning I proceeded to reassemble them with the new oversized pins. All went well until the last one. A Bonnet/hood hinge just fell apart as I was pressing the new pin in.

I screamed "AWW BERKELEY!" and a co-worker looked at me and said "what the hell is that supposed to mean?" I couldn't even begin to explain.

I have an email into KIP Auto trying to find them a new one

You berkeleying berkeleyed the berkeley hinge up when you berkeleyed up pushing the berkeleying big berkeleypin into the berkeleying berkeley hinge? I'm sure those berkeley hinges are a real motherberkeleyer to find a replacement for, motherberkeleyer.

You have to admit that those have far exceeded their expected useful life. I'm sure that they were engineered with an anticipated lifespan of about one or two afternoons.

are they some sort of zinc/potmetal casting? easiest route may be to have the good part molded and cast, then you can make 2 more and sell them to the other person that has a berkeley

Yeah they are pot metal. KIP has them but they are apparently different from right to left and I am at a loss trying to tell them apart and identify which side I need.

I just wanted to have fun with the word filters. I am glad you folks did too

Ok, anybody care to explain the berkley thing?

Makes about as much sense as E36 M3.

Vaguely off topic, but does anyone know a source for hinges like this? I'm not talking exact stuff for a restoration, just similar. Say for a custom build, so as not to have to spend hours and hours making hinges.

Thx appleseed. OK, the berkley is a new one to me.

But how did E36 M3 become defecate? I don't get that one. E36's are not E36 M3. lol

E36's are THE E36 M3. Not E36 M3

The Berkeley sport is one of these

GRM built one that tried to kill them and made the driver shout "OH berkeley" whenever the throttle was applied

Hence Berkeley!

Wheelsmithy.

TR3 used similar hinges.

TR3 boot Hinges are a lot like the door hinges, but without the angle at the joint. Thanks for the tip!
