Supra. I could also say S2000 if we're going to try and throw the mr2 spider in there

Looks like a MKIV Supra. I'm curious how "best-handling" was quantified by BMW.

Anyway, I would agree E36 BMW if this car will be the DD as well. I wouldn't want to DD an S2000, FD, etc.

Have you seen the prices lately? Must be something good going on there. And the second Gen remains my favorite car I have never actually driven. Now that they are older, finding one with a cage and some updates is high on my bucket list.

On a more realistic budget, a rust-free 1991 Civic Hatch with a B16 or a well-done turbo would be my pick for the best toy to have from the 90s.

It wasn't. It was the result of a shoot out in Car & Driver back in '97... http://www.m3forum.com/articles/Car_and_Driver_Sept_1997.pdf

All he said was street car.

Daur 962 was built as a Street car to compete in GT1 at LeMans and won in 94.

A little more honest

One of my personal favorites

Not what you meant? Oh. then how about Or an Evo III Integrale

Or cheap and cheerful Mk I 106 Rallye (correct spelling)

And let us not forget Too old?

then this is hard to argue with

I'm just taking note that the OP specifically said "chassis" and not "car."

If the question was "car," then i wouldn't have picked FD RX7.

apparently there is some love/hate for my avatar poster...

unfortunately the FD would have been out by 97, and thus this question (e36 vs FD) needs more debate.

Does weight factor into this discussion? What about potential for upgrades? I'd say aftermarket support should be part of the discussion too.

Unless the debate is limited to pure capability straight from the factory I wouldn't rule the Miata out here.

Also, because I like to be contrary.

I daily drove my FD for a while and I wouldnt recommend it, not at least with the rotary power. Its a complex setup stock. Since you are talking chassis only then it may work.

MKIV Supras and SC300 chassis do really well and you can put whatever under the hood.

For a do-it-all car, I've never found a better choice than an E36 M3. Of course, I may be a bit biased

I probably am too... these are the two best of the 5 or 6 E36s that have lived here over the last 15 years.

I like the 2nd gen 626 as much as the next guy, but i don't think i'd call it the best chassis of the 90s, because it wasn't, and it wasn't a 90s vehicle.

I read that article, and Wow! Mid-engine isn't everything, especially with the Boxster. I'm surprised that the 911 was so low, yet we have such a high regard of it, at least with enthusiasts. I will keep my "regular" 328i.

I vote the E36 first, and the Miata second.
