Yeah, thanks to you rat bastards I'm now focusing my car searching on the Insight as well. Of course they have to be as rare as unicorns though...just trying to find one to go look at is a challenge. My commute sounds ideal for the Insight. 25 miles of almost completely flat suburban country roads...I cruise most of it at 50-55mph. Plus it seems like a fun car.
Atlanta!
'00 5-speed, $4900 (Gainesville)
Now I want an insight, too. Someone find me a red 5-speed model. And take my Volvo wagon off my hands.

I would try an insight for commuting but I don't think I can ditch the back seat and baby carrying capacity of my TDI
The Insight is now on my list as well, sounds like it would be ideal for my commute.

So last year we both showed up at Summit with 850 wagons. Are we both going to show up this year in Insights?? People may start to look at us funny...
I figured the insight was a good option, but now my automotive ADHD is kicking in and I'm starting to think it might be a rather good idea if I want to take the Mini to being a not-every-day car and get a cheap[er] car to commute in... damn you all!

Mwahahaha, so much win!
Jaynen, if you already have a TDI i wouldnt buy an Insight unless you are interested in modding the hybrid parts and/or hypermiling. If you leave it stock it is just a very small hatchback that gets 10-20more mpg (my 50mpg number is LOW for an insight owner, but i drive the hell out of it). Which, once you are getting 40 mpg already, is not that big of a deal.

That's kind of what I'm kicking around too. My '08 Fit will get 38-40mpg without much trouble, which is a pretty damn good number. I need to try to check an Insight out if I can find one locally to see if I like the car enough to make me want to sell the Fit.

except the TDI uses diesel, which, at least here, is 90¢ per gal more than 87

That would be pretty awesome.
It'll probably be late spring before I have the fleet cleaned up enough to buy another car, but an Insight is on the list.

Good point. The difference is not as large where i live.
yeah, I've heard other states that don't screw the diesel user as badly as NC
Had a thought while I was washing the Prius today. We've never had to change the brake pads. That's 112,000 miles and counting.

It's like 40 cents here. And I get 43 doing 80 not even trying to hypermile. And I am running 17" wheels which oddly did not cost me mileage I guess due to the better quality tire and reduction in weight

I've heard its pretty common to see a Prius come in for its first brake service well past 100k - some over 150k. Really makes you think about how much energy its recapturing.

If I didn't have the Insight some flavor of VW TDi would definitely be my 2nd choice.
I have wanted an Insight for awhile but I would be putting something more power under the hood. .

I like mine, although sometimes I find it too spartan and want to replace it, other times I want to do chips and injectors because I could have a lot more power without a mpg penalty

They still get in the upper 40s with a K20.
I know it is somewhat integral to the low CD of the Insight, but the covered rear wheels always bothered me from a aesthetic standpoint. Years ago when it debuted I saw a photochop of an Insight-into-modern-CRX with normal rear wheel openings and it was HAWT. I wish I could find it now.
That said, I'd still rock it.
