I am going to need an auto transport as my 2000 Corvette blew a tranny in OR
and I need to get the car back to NC. GM, bless em, does not have a tranny anywhere in the country and this puts an end to the vacation of dreams for my wife and I.
I have been all over the internet looking at auto transports and it seems to be a real swamp. Has anybody used a service that they were well pleased with, and, if so would you please make a reccommendation.
Thanks for looking
this is my dad and I am powerless to help them out in this hope y'all could please give us some help here.
Uship.com and check the reviews of the individual shipper you're looking into.
Wish I was closer, NW Ohio if we can help
Can't get it fixed locally?
Definitely uship.com I've used them several times and actually used them in a similar situation a few months ago. While moving our family from PA to GA, our tow dolly had an issue and we had to abandon our minivan that it was towing at a hotel in MD. Found a hauler through u-ship to come get it for us. Best of luck.
Oh...and GM indeed has trannies. They just try to keep a low profile while at work.
Hey call Jon at 949.464.8816
I just used him after my other carrier gave me the run around for 2 months.
Tell him James with the 79 benz sent you. Or give me your number and I can have him call you.
I'm headed to the Siskyou Sports Car Club Fall Enduro right now, I've got a cooler of beer to share. It's at Jackson county sports center. I'm racing my Corvette, don't bring any bad transmission luck though, I'm already towing a camper.
Yup. Dads trans is scrap metal. Catastrophic failure in a manual six speed. Thanks for helping him guys. Ive been trying to figure out how to go get it and still be employed and married. Unfortunately it's not possible for me to do so.
Is that jon guy a licensed/insured transporter?
If we can get it back home and find a used trans, im sure dad and I can do it for less than the 6k labor the gm dealer wants.
And aussie: I owe you a cold one ifyou come tthrough nc on the way back from the challenge.
I'm in Portland, so I'm a bit out of the way to help directly. I did put the word out to some car-folks in the area that might be able to help. We'll see.
There are some racers headed south for the weekend for a SCCA championship race in California, so perhaps there will be some folks in the area that could help in some way.
In reply to Dusterbd13:
Yes give him a call and see what he can do for you. He has my friends gvr4 scheduled to go from Oregon to SC.
I have a Go To Guy for transmissions. He fixes the ones the other shops can't fix.
Trans Action in Forest Grove OR. 503 359 9141
I shipped a BMW from Portland, OR to Jacksonville, FL using DAS. I had a good experience with them. Others have had issues, but I would use them again. Cost about $1100.
Thanks, everyone, for trying to get someone back in the game. It's nice to see the community in action.
Did a quick search on car-part.com... if he wants used, there are some out this way.... Airport Truck and Auto USA-OR(Salem) E-mail 1-800-654-1404 shows 5 available...
Jack with Kinetic Vehicles (the Locost guru) is in the area. He may know of some local shops and transporters.

Thanks to everybody for your thoughts and offers of advice and help. I spent a day talking to car haulers and it turns out that is a real swamp with some good and some very bad experiences. Seems as though most of these people are brokers and you never know what or who you are going to get for an actual driver. The horrer stories are really rampant.
I love my Vette and have been fortunate enough to own several and race one for several years, but what GM is doing to all their customers is sinful. They will openly tell you that if it is more than ten years old, they are not obligated to supply parts and they no longer carry them. This is not just Corvettes, but all of their brands.
I am 68 and have had a love affair with Vettes since I was a 15 year old kid with an unaffordable dream, but God smiled and I did eventually get there and bought the car of my dreams,a 60 Vette, when I was 59. GM, their polices and attitude, crushed that 50+ year love affair.
We traded the Vette in on an appliance car, a Mazda3 hatchback of all things, and will move on. NEVER again will I own anything with a GM label on it.
It breaks my heart to leave my baby sit behind, but life goes on and now my wife and I will be able to continue our vacation without having to worry about GM's planned obsolecense.
Thanks again to everyone with their offers to help

Wow, this is not how I was hoping that this would turn out.

very familiar with the "we don't support old cars" … trying to find OEM parts for a 20+ yr old Honda is "fun"
sorry to hear about the problems you've run into
Mazda 3 is a good choice. Please be safe as you travel and keep us updated. We love road trip stories

I don't get it. You dumped the car because you couldn't get a "new" transmission from Chevrolet?
Sorry, but that's crazy. The transmissions are available, just like transmissions are available for almost any GM car built for the last 50 years. They may not be new, although many are being reproduced, but they aren't available from Chevy. I don't see the issue.

Same here. I've had similar issues with other manufactures, including Porsche. I normally just buy used, rebuilt, or from the aftermarket, usually at a lower price anyway, and move on. It's a shame you had issues, but the end result seems unreal to me. Anyone else wondering how much the dealer will sell the vette for with a blown trans?? I see opportunity here.
After talking with dad at length this morning, I kind of understand why they did what they did. Its not the same choice i would have made, nor others, but im not him either.
If y'all out there see a dark green convertable with tan top and interior, magnesium wheels, electronic suspension, and corsa exhaust, buy it. Great car other than the trans.
And mom has been wanting a hatch ever since the crx was worn out. Dad finally got her one.
He still has the 60 and the 51 f1 with a full tilt flattie. He ain't getting out of the game that easy. I also see a full tilt cobra replica in the near future as a convertable replacement. Hes always wanted one.
