Yeah that's the one... i think i got the motor mixed up with Ken Gushi's old ride or something.

I may not be a huge fan of drifting but I love the ingenuity that goes into building a drift car. I've never heard of a 1AR-FE before until I read that article. Might be good Challenge fodder now or in the near future. After all, it's just a minivan engine...

I, for one, would be thrilled if GM built a small RWD car and it sold well.

I'm still excited about the BRZ.

Don't forget the insurance reduction power of back seats. Without them this thing would look worse to the insurance company than an Elise on paper, and that would keep it out of young guys' hands.

I'm still torn on that particular swap though... its been shown a LSx fits in there quite easily and weighs less than the 2JZ. That and it would qualify for SMS/SM2. Toyota powerplant wins the stylepoints though

See, i would go about it with no other goals than:

1) Check THIS out!
2) DO YOU HEAR THIS?
3) 1000whp!

As a matter of fact... if i had seen that before i went Miata shopping... i wouldn't have gone Miata shopping. I'm dead serious.

Why put in a motor that's an older, weaker version of the one that's already in the car?

In reply to petegossett:

STi version of the BRZ that has been seen has some aero kit stuff, STi badges (all over as seems to be standard for STis), a different spoiler, and different wheels. Still no turbo on it. Earlier articles on the BRZ have Subaru people claiming that fitting a turbo would be difficult. There are plenty of rumors that a turbo version is in the works and I have no doubt that factory installed or not a turbo will show up on it eventually.

That said, the BRZ already has a better power to weight ratio than my 2007 WRX and it doesn't have to push it through AWD. My WRX is plenty of fun. Although the BRZ doesn't have the torque numbers of the WRX the lack of turbo lag and the power/torque curves that have been described could still mean a very exciting ride.

FTFY. My understanding is that the impetus and overall design are Toyota, but the car is built from Subaru parts. I would think that would cause reliability to be much more akin to other Subarus than other Toyotas.

Would it really be improved weight distribution? As it is, it's something like 52/48, would shifting those 2% rearward actually improve the handling or fun-factor of the car? I strongly suspect that no it wouldn't, and having slight forward weight balance is going to make it a more predictable drifter.

I can also say for certain that if this was a 2-seater, I would have zero interest in it whatsoever.

Well it's a moot point now, isn't it? I just loathe fake seats. And I've heard that these are as bad as anything out there. Sorry to be a curmudgeon, but I find it curious that people are talking about 52/48 being perfect weight distribution (not necessarily in this thread, but elsewhere.) It's excellent distribution compared to most cars, and perhaps it's ideal for drifting, but in a full-tilt performance car, a rearward bias is preferable.

But enough negativity. I think that this is a fine car, and I'd certainly consider one. At least my dog wouldn't complain about the rear seats.

Well, I suppose you could repeatedly quote F&F every time someone sees the car for the first time..

Dom: Waddaya got there?
Brian: This is your car.
Dom: My car? I said a 10 second car, not a 10 minute car.
Jesse: You could push this across the finish line, or...tow it?
Brian: No faith.
Dom: Oh, I have faith in you, but this isn't a junkyard, this is a garage.
Brian: Pop the hood.
Dom: Pop the hood?
Brian: Pop the hood.
Jesse: 2JZ engine, no E36 M3.
Brian: What did I tell you?

In reply to ReverendDexter:

I looked into the cars, as best I could, and the rear seats look less useful than my MINI seats and they're pretty useless ! I'd treat the FRS/BRZ rear seats as a sound barrier to the trunk and little else. If I buy one ,the rear seats will be folded down most of the time, or I'll create a rear seat delete load floor on my own.

Oh, no doubt. If they'd put an SLA front suspension on it I'd have already sold the Miata in anxious anticipation! As it is, I'm looking forward to a test drive in a few months.

I don't recall what blog I was reading, but there was a quote from one of the engineers that specifically said there would be a turbo STi and supercharged Toyota/Scion at some point. It really surprised me the manufacturers would let something like that leak before the car is even launched.

Fiat of new isn't the Fiat of old. There are plenty of new Fiats running around Europe without problems so I really am not worried about reliability.

Plus for a daily driver I think the Abarth is going to be more useful and on the road I really doubt any difference in performance is going to be noticeable. Also I don't like Scions.

I wouldn't buy one for the simple reason that it has a Subaru engine.

After my last experience with Subaru powerplants I'm loathe to go through the process of spun bearings again. And given the fact that every performance shop around here is swamped with Subaru engine rebuilds I'm far from the only one who experienced catastrophic failure.
