Why does it matter? Because it’s a huge engineering achievement. 300 mph in street car is a Big Deal and now Bugatti will always be remembered for it.

We have shown several times that we build the fastest cars in the world. In the future we will focus on other areas.
...Right up until somebody hits 305.
I bet it's more like 311 mph (500 kph).

When it comes down to it, anything over about 85 is pointless, but that doesn't mean people don't want the ability to go faster.
Wow, 300mph is truly amazing. I'm just glad nobody gave up their life for this Corporate Bragging Right.

You don't need any social commentary for this- this is a one trick pony- it just goes fast. Which isn't really helpful for driving it in the real world- be it on actual roads, or in any race, other than land speed racing.
The only "magical" thing is that they have manged to put that much power in a vehicle that is certified in some country for sale.
As for the sensation of speed- well, I guess there is that.
Sorry that some view it as not a big deal- which should not be a big deal- I don't think anyone noticed when a Supra did 270 over a decade ago.
That’s the thing about this car, it’s exactly Not a one trick pony. It does all the daily driver luxury stuff really well, it’s civilized, luxurious and has a sick stereo, as reliable as other regular unreliable vw stuff, quiet, smooth. What do you want it to do? Be good off road? I’m not a huge fan of this or the veyron, but there’s little arguing that they’re not pretty well rounded for what they achieve performance wise.
If this car doesn't have an analog speedometer that goes to 300 then the whole thing is pointless. Ok maybe not but..I'd be disappointed.
this is a real car , when you see some of the streamliners etc that are trying for 200mph or more thats scary ,
I do not have the balls to drive many of the cars at top speed that I have owned thru the years......

It really does share a lot with the old bugatti atlantics and whatever stuff you see at pebble beach. It just so happens that at this point, 300mph is the new 150. Screamers with style then, screamers with (subjectively) style now. The attention to detail is second to none.
I guess it will fall to Hammond to prove it on TV. Neither Clarkson or May look physically fit enough for 300 mph.
