I purchased a 1971 Ford F100 from my place of work. It needs work, I'm going everyday after school and fixing her up. Today I verified that she will run on starter fluid, also diagnosed a bad fuel pump. I'm gonna put a new one on tomorrow and report back. That I need a new carb . It will eventually take over daily duty, I'm in love with this truck in a way I can't explain. Just wanted to share with yall!

You're 16? I am so glad to see young people jumping into this GRM world we live in. Nice truck.

My buddy bought the first year square body Chevrolet - 1973 4X4 3/4 ton truck that lived in the Chicago and had rusted to death by 1979. It was pathetic and required a lot of work to get it cleaned up.

Later in 1990 I roll into Piedmont, Alabama to visit my wife's family and we visit her uncle who happens to own the OK Tire store - he had a 1973 truck that he had bought new to run to the distributor weekly to pick up his tires. It was worn out and tired and a bit faded but it did not have a spot of rust on it. I was blown away how clean that was compared to the Chicago rust belt cars. And he wouldn't sell it to me.

I miss my 76 almost daily. I keep shopping for another one off and on. Prices are going up and rust free is rare. Looks like a pretty clean starting point!

Do you NEED a new carb, or can the existing carb be rebuilt? That's the cheaper route, and you learn something in the process as well.

Fair point, its the stock 2 barrel, I'm thinking i can pick up a couple ponies if i go 4 barrel, as well pave the way for other mods. However, I'm super naive, please prove me wrong; love to learn

You'll need to change the manifold as well if you go to a four barrel. If the initial plan is just to get it roadworthy, I'd spend a few bucks on a rebuild kit for the existing carb (assuming it even needs one), then worry about HP modifications later.

Rebuild kits are cheap and what you learn makes it worth doing. Get it running well as is and go from there. The cautious old man part of me is wondering what the date code on those tires reads.

With the advent of digital cameras tearing something down for the first time is much simpler. Just take lots of photos as you go and lay each piece out in the order you take it off. Work on the biggest table you have access to and you will be surprised how easy a rebuild will be.

2 barrels are easy to rebuild if it actually needs to be done. I doubt you'd get much out of a 4 barrel swap without heads and a cam, a used Exploder long block becomes an attractive option at that point.

If it hasn't run in a while, don't buy anything just yet. Do the basic gas-air-spark exams and backtrack to the problem. Pop the top off the carb and peek inside. Schmutz? Debis? Remove the fuel line from the carb and turn it over. Anything?

Nice truck.

Not just the engine, but the entire vehicle. It would be a waste of good money to get a new carb, only to find out that you have to rebuild the brakes- and you can't afford that.

It's one of the more important paths before massive changes- know what you have, know what you need. For a DD, you may find out that the carb is just fine- we had one in '67 pick up that I never thought was down on power.

A rebuild kit is very simple and easy. And educational- that may help you know carbs and know what you are then buying, making advice from other people more informational than just good/bad.

If you decide to rebuild the carb, spread a sheet over the top of your workbench, and take the carb apart on it. While it's not a difficult job, there are many small parts you'll want to keep track of.

IT RUNS! It purrs actually, for a car that hasn't been run since I was 7, it runs very smooth. Its a little wheezy, but that will be short lived after she's fully revived. Next up is a new master cylinder and type-F ATF.
