What was that horrible '70s knock off of the Mercedes SSK?

I thought there was one that wasn't a kit car.

The Excalibur actually first came out in 1963. Phyllis Diller owned one.

I'm not sure that is a strong selling point.

When it was delivered she said "Wow, this has more plastic than Joan Rivers face"

My dad actually owned a '78 Phaeton III. It had a 454 crammed in there, and the exhaust pipes coming out from the hood were real. I remember going on long ice cream runs, with me and my two sisters going three wide in the back seat. Wherever we went it always started a conversation, typically "Is that a kit?"

Panther Kallista is sorta in the same vein, but it looks a lot more Morgan and a lot less Mercedes.

Excaliber's were built in West Allis (Milwaukee), Wisconsin and were built largely on Corvette running gear and designed by Brooks Stevens (Studabaker,Harley-Davidson etc.). Like most cars of the 70's, they grew to be big and bloated, but the early cars, IMO, were pretty cool...

Yeah! Some of the Excaliburs were pretty dang cool. Fast, too, faster than the contemporary Corvettes since they were lighter.

I didn't know about the early Excaliburs! That green one above looks great, (at the very least it looks like something a 1970s Pimp would be less inclined to drive).

Makes me think of a hot-rodded HRG.

For some reason I remember where I first heard of the Excalibur. I was about 12 when I saw an article and picture of this car in Playboy Magazine. I thought I too could get me "some" if only I had a car like that. Ah the innocence of youth.
