How about an automotive "engineering" pet peeve?

WTF was wrong with dipsticks? Why in the berkeley did you take them away?

"Don't worry, we replaced it with 16 different sensors. What can go wrong?"

I love doing an oil change on a non-dipstick car and having to wait 20 minutes for the computer to recognize that I need to add another .25 quarts

If a customer isn't capable of opening a hood and pulling out a dipstick, do you think they are going to go through 8 menus and 16 sub-menus on their dash to check the oil? Nope, they'll just continue to drive until the idiot light comes on. Just like they have been doing for decades...

I had some tool ask me that at an autocross (he was an observer).

Me-"Freeway speeds dude. This wasn't built for top speed."

Apparently he didn't notice the small diameter wheels and giant plexi spoiler on the back.

There was a local 350z that the guy had the exhaust replaced with straight pipe from the cat back. 2.25" cruch bent. Sounded horrific. And the 350z has one of the best sounding factory exhaust systems ever.

This is a good one, I lived in Germany for a few years, so I've gone faster on the drive to the commissary (autobahn) than I have on any race track I've ever been on.

Maybe if I went to Talladega...

Cold air intakes, and the people who usually buy them.

It's the rare care that simply adding one will do anything beyond generating some intake noise, but it's always Modification Number One for people other than those cruising around GRM land.

"Be patient - I'm lowered" stickers on cars with springs cut with a grinder. Your car isn't "lowered"--it's "butchered". My bleeping race car is lowered and I don't have to crawl over minor road imperfections at 2 mph. Idiots.

that was my second mod .. the first was a header …. whp went from 105 to 121, then the CAI took it to 131 .. and the torque increased an equal %

some cars really do improve with better breathing

I think that it's the old, not so well tunneled factory intake systems that need to be replaced eventually. My Camaro has a throttle body injection in the middle of the engine compartment with an air cleaner on top.

Instead of reminding someone the brand of car that has a big empty space in the dash they printed a big smiley face there. That is sadder than all the little black caps pointing out the options my Escort could have had if I were the more successful person my mother hoped I would have become.

My Caravan used to have a GIGANTIC fuel gauge where the tach would otherwise go. Never thought i cared about it but when i replaced the cluster with one with a tach and a tiny fuel gauge, i decided i missed my big fuel gauge.

And then i ran it out of gas.

At least the gas gauge was a gauge and not a plate proclaiming your thriftiness. It they just centered the speedometer most people would never notice something was missing.

At least it's easy to fix. The wirings all there, and the cluster is easy to disassemble. Just got to grab a tach cluster at the junkyard, and pull the tach out of it.

That annoys me more than anything. It's always some dudebro with a auto camaro or lifted truck too or some kid who knows nothing about cars.

I had a 03 350z i got second hand and it had the most annoying sounding exhaust ever on it. Droned hard on the highway and I couldn't wait to get the stock back in.

Ive noticed that with recent chrysler products the drivers 9/10 of the time have no taste. Only ones that do are the SRT drivers.

Bought a cold air intake once, for a WRX, wish I didn't and wont be doing it again. Usually any restriction a new filter will fix if there is any restriction at all. That's what happens when you have a parts market based on "stages" where "stage 1" usually says instake+tune. I know better now.

Some cars though have issues with plastic intake piping and if you put a lot of boost through the car you need a metal pipe. Of course a WRX is not one of those cars.

Loud Harley's. Hate 'em. And I hate the d-bags that ride 'em.

Look, your POS bike won't stall at the stop light, you don't need to blip the throttle every three seconds.

(oh, and I got a secret for ya tough guy: REAL tough guys don't need half-a-dozen other biker-gang wannabes surrounding them at all times. Losers)

So you are saying that I have no taste? Drives a Black '07 Charger RT with aftermarket exhaust, CAI and Diablo tuned

Gearheadotaku wrote: "Why didn't you buy one with a V8?" ...at $4 bucks a gallon I can barely afford the V6!

Actually on some rigs it makes ALMOST no difference. When we bought the Charger I think over all the difference between the V6 and the V8 was 1 or 2 MPG. The V8 shuts down 4 cylinders when you are just cruising along calm and cool like so that really helps the mileage.

excessive badging.

Mercedes is really bad about this. As they will often put two logos within inches of each other. Sometimes worse. Sometime the owners do it too.
