BMW 2002tii.
Fun car, fun drivetrain, rusts like nobody's business!
In reply to Duke:
I used to want one but it's practically impossible to find where I live. Haven't seen an ad for those in years.

No more than $5000. This will be a daily beater that is fun.
Ok so right now I will be scouring Craigslist for clean examples of:
Anything missing?

I can't remember what your situation is, but if I were going to get into a b13 again, I would first buy the cleanest manual 4 door XE I could find. Then I would buy an NX2000 that was crashed or whatever. Then I would buy my motor of choice from an importer. Then I would combine the three, part out the crap you dont use, and find some suspension bits. Then you'd pretty much be done except for minor details here and there.

I'm not interested in swaps of any kind. I have two other project cars to deal with so I just want a fun daily.
A G20 is more likely to be stock/pampered than a B13 SE-R. I instructed a few years back in a mostly stock, auto, 1st Gen G20 and walked away pretty impressed...

Yes. The optional S/R package adds stiffer suspension parts (Eibach springs (M-5560-Z2), Tokico struts (M-18000-Z2) and Energy Suspension brand polyurethane suspension bushings, a Ford Racing PCM (M-12650-Z2), more efficient intake (Iceman), rear disc brakes (M-2300-Z2), a stronger clutch (Centerforce dual-friction (M-7560-Z2), a short-throw B&M manual-transmission shifter (M-7210-Z2), an S/R-unique shift knob (M-7213-Z2) and boot (M-7277-Z2). Engine power was increased 10% over the base Zetec engine used in the ZX2 to 143 bhp, and included a Borla muffler and pipe (M-5230-Z2)

My first car was an NX2000 and I was driving a Focus SVT a year ago. The focus was nice, but not as exciting to drive as the NX. The seating position is pretty high, and I was never fond of the lack of acceleration in 1st gear. Mileage rarely broke 30 on the focus even pure highway, but I remember getting 32-33 on the NX beating on it.
The celica was an option for replacing the focus, but I didn't like how cheap the interior was. Not that the focus was much better. The gauges in the ford aren't very bright at night either.
That said the extra room in the focus was nice, and all I put into it was a clutch master cylinder and fixed the thermostat housing leak.
A friend of mine had an 01' GS-R while I had the focus and I think that compared to the nissan better.
I have a SVT and I owned a 97 SE-R. The SE-R felt like a tin can and the steering was vague by today's standard. That said, the motor and gearing on that car was perfect, every time I got in the car it just wanted me to punch that little SR20DE. I like my Focus, maybe a 2.3L Focus would be a better match with the 5 speed. Focus four door ST?
Purpose is important - I hear comments about the SVT Focus gearing being to tall. And it is - for drag racing off of street lights. First gear esp with the A/C on is boggy with the car loaded down. Several things help that (a tune, UDP, and lightweight fly) but no doubt first gear is no stump puller.
But if road-course type fun is what you seek, the Cosworth SVT engine loves to rev and is well matched to the 6 speed gearbox. Wind it out a bit and the combo really sings. Both of mine have seen Road Atlanta and I have no complaints about the motor or gearbox. IMO, the Focus SVT is twice the car my NX2000 or B14 was.
Go drive one.....................
I've had my 94 g20-t as a daily driver for 2 years now(before that an 87 supra turbo and before that a honda crx) and its been a great little car. Handles very well ( not as well as a se-r or my mr2 but still pretty good) has been very cheap to maintain( other then the rear wheel bearings that can be hard to source) and i average 30mpg. I've even done a few track days at VIR with it (only modds, bigger rear swaybar, performance pads and ES bushings). The car is at 240k has fantastic compression and the only engine problem is the timing chain tensenor is just starting to rattle but thats a 50 dollar part and 30min of labor lol
The ONLY down side is there is a very limited aftermarket for the g20 in the US but most anything you could want someone over one g20.net can help you find lol
I should have checked my driveway - there is another car that channels the SE-R (but exceeds it) - the Protege MP3. We have a 2001; the feel is lighter than the SVTF, more nimble than the SE-R. Drive the MP3 for a day and then hop in the Focus - now the SVTF feels like a BMW E46 M3. The MP3 is not rev happy tho it will rev. The SE-R didn't mind reving, the SVTF loves it, the MP3 tolerates it. As for torque, even with the taller gearing the Focus has more get up and go than the others.
The problem with the MP3 (or Protege 5 as well) is for some reason people think they are worth $8,000 with 130k miles. Finding one for a reasonable price with low miles is tough.
We also have a ZX2 in driveway with the S/R suspension kit and sways. It is on the same level as the SE-R - maybe not quite as willing to rev, but the closest to a B14. But the SE-R was a slightly better car, I think. The MP3 is better yet, and the SVTF is at the top.

They also rust about as bad as a 323 (specifically the GTX model)!

Hehe........that's the advantage of the motorhead Dad finding cars for the boys. I find'em, they pay for'em. And I even get to drive them (sometimes)!
Now if I could just get them to do the maintenence.

That sounds like a fun stable of cars you have, man. I was looking into the MP3's but never find them for sale where I live. That's why I started looking to the Protege5. From what I read it's a little lighter and has a shorter wheelbase than the MP3.
