Just drove from Cinci to Mobile Al, and then around Playa de Carmen in Mexico. I really hoped Id see more great cars considering the sheer amount of time on the road and the distances covered. I didnt see that many, but there were a few notables (sorry, no pics):

  • Burgundy turbo 944 with SCCA stickers all over it being trailered just inside the northern border of Al on I-65 SB - it had a rack full of mounted spares on what appeared to be BBS type wheels. Sticker on the door was number 161 IIRC, anyone know this car?

  • Beautiful Karmann Ghia ratrod - patina'd and chopped a bit, with what appeared to be a northstar in the back (no rear cover)

  • lots of awesome bikes including a super old triumph (50s? with the skinny tires) parked outside of a tuxedo store attached to a truck stop in Tennessee

  • Oscar Meyer weinermobile

  • a super clean bone stock looking white Porsche Speedster

in mexico, the only notable stuff I saw was a Clio something or other and a Renault Megane (both were rather rough looking and stock) and an Ibiza tiny super sub compact

I saw lots of Vettes on the road, and a parade of Humvees and utilities equipment/cherry pickers etc headed south ( probably for relief efforts - storm damage was still very visible and a lot of places had supply donation centers set up).

I really was hoping that there would be more to look at. What have you all seen on road trips?

This morning on my roadtrip to work I saw (and couldn't quite catch up to, thanks to traffic) a white/blue late '70s Carerra RS copy that looked to be caged. Funny thing was is sounded suspiciously LS-powered from a couple carlengths away. I can't imagine a Porsche fanatic surviving that kind of swap.

And Saturday afternoon I saw a RUF based on the current 911. Never seen one in the States before. It was refrigerator white with black wheels - and subtle enough that I bet it was real, not fake. Sounded badass, and definitely a flat six.

Not so much a road trip as a cruise, but in Nassau I saw a Toyota Cavalier.

(Not this actual car - this is just an example.)

Not only does Chevy sell Toyotas as Chevrolets, but for some incomprehensible reason Toyota sells Chevorlets as Toyotas. That must take a toll on their reliability reputation even more that unintended acceleration...

Unless there are two with this paint job, I saw this $12 million Testa Rossa at the top of Monarch Pass in Colorado during the "Colorado Grand". There were exotics all over the place.

8C Alfa (supercharged 8 cyl GP car)

DB4 Zagato

Bugatti Atlantic ("atlantique)

hahaha, Keith won that round.

Almost ANY car on the Colorado Grand cold win this battle, even the pedestrian (common) 300sl and SWB Californias.

The Grand is usually the best car show of the year, AND you can hear them run!

Can't top that TR though . . . .

I thought on a long shot I'd try to find an image of the Humpin' Henry J gasser that I saw at a gas station while driving back to California from Texas with my family when I was nine... Wasn't surprised I couldn't find a pic, but I just found a copy of Chevy Power magazine on ebay that had a feature on it!

Popping up 30 years later, figured I'd better nab it... What are the odds?

the other day on the way back from work (1 hour drive) I saw either a REAL Shelby Cobra or an amazingly well done kit with the 427 in it (or something that sounds identical to the 427
this was immediately followed by a GTR (the first I've ever seen)
the next day on the same route I saw an FF (the new awd ferrari hatch type deal), followed by a black 2nd gen viper
I've also seen a real Continental GT, a tesla roadster, a couple more vipers, a smattering of vantage's and db-s's, a dale earnhardt edition new camaro, a lime green koennigseg (sp), and a TR6 being the most recent car that it amazed me to see.
Race City USA, home of rednecks with a TON of money. lol

Agreed. I've been to the Mille Miglia and the Colorado Grand is the only event that draws anything like the same sort of cars.

At the Mille, I almost got run down by Stirling Moss in the real "722" 300 SLR during tech inspection. There were Testa Rossas littered about, and I have a picture of a Jaguar C- or D-Type just sitting in a bus stop in the rain with a car cover half blown off and nobody around. But that doesn't count as "seen on a road trip", since we'd traveled to Brescia just for the Mille. That was back in 1991 or so.

Saw an E30 last week that had a 340is emblem on the back. When I asked if the car had an M60 the owner smiled and opened the hood..

Looks like at least one of the local Tesla Roadsters has come out of hibernation now.

someone unloaded two Porsche gt3 road race cars in our parking lot today and started doing what looked like some electrical work (one guy was tucked up under the dash in the drivers side)
wanted to go talk to them but when I saw them setting boxes of stuff on top of the roof of their quarter million dollar cars, it kind of bummed me out. not sure if thta makes sense to you all but it does to me.
nonetheless, two gt3 race cars in the parking lot outside the walmart tire and lube is something to be gawked at for sure.
