So... assuming 200TW tires and a not-insane engine choice, where do the various Lotus 7 clones wind up for autocross?

For years we had one person who had several, of varying levels of spiciness, and he always ran on Hoosiers in D Mod because that way it didn't matter which one he showed up with.

Then we had another guy who started bringing his own home-built 7, and he ran in D Mod because the other guy was already there.

But now we're getting more of them at our events, and the original guy sold off all but 1 normal Caterham Super 7, so I want to make sure we get them all in the right class going forward.

Thanks!

As far as I understand it, all Lotus 7s and clones go directly to Mod, regardless of tire.

My impression is that none of the options other than maybe an original Lotus counts as a "production car", so that means a Mod category, D or E.

...Unless bike-engined, which technically get bumped to BM.

OK, thanks. Original, Lotus-branded 7s can be run in CS I think (CSP?  I'm away from Appendix A right now) but that is original cars with <1.4L engines.

So it sounds like DM it is, unless bike engined. Thanks everyone!

D mod if less than 2.0L.   E mod if over or if the turbo multiplier puts you over.    E mod has higher minimum weight.   tires don't matter unless you don't run DOT then you have to meet additional requirements.

Looks like CS, SSP, and DP for original Lotus 7s.  No ST or SSM love for them, though.

Does a true Caterham qualify as a Lotus branded original? They seem like production cars to me.

In reply to Woody (Forum Supportum) :

I don't believe so since they were indeed licensed by Lotus, but updated numerous ways. Also, even Caterhams are far from 'production' since they are basically shipped to the dealer like half-assembled kit cars with lots of customization on the assembly end.

The person in my OP was a Caterham dealer which is why he had such a selection to choose from.

Thanks to everyone else for the additional detail!

They technically aren't legal for C Street either, thanks to the 30 year rule.

SCCA 18.1.C.2.h

"h. All series of Lotus 7, 7A, Super 7 and their clone or kit forms (such as Birkin, Westfield, Locost) are automatically classified as Modified Tubs. This also applies to the Shelby Cobra and its clones."

Edit: that's from 2020. Not going to confirm when but the 2022 Modified rules are a bit different and seem to allow original Lotus 7 and 7A in some other classes

Lotus 7 and clones are D and E mod cars with car motors... full stop.

they're too light to hit min weight in street mod classes and xtreme street.
