I recently bought this el-cheapo tire changer and balancer setup. http://mayflowertools.com/product/1-5-hp-automatic-tire-changer-wheel-changers-machine-rim-balancer-combo-960-680/
The manual recommends doing a calibration of the balancer after shipping. It wants a hub centric 15" steel wheel with a tire, but I I don't have such a thing. I'm thinking they specify a steel wheel because the 100g calibration weight is designed for steel wheels.
Has anyone tried using an aluminum wheel? I have NB Miata 15" aluminum wheels, and I can cludge together 100g of weights that would work with that though they take up a lot more space on the rim.
I'm interested in any experience anyone has doing this calibration on the generic eBay balancers.
Mine wanted a bare steel wheel. Run it, put the 100g weight on and run it again, calibrated.
edit i looked at your profile, deadskunk is in dexter too and i bet he has a steel wheel with a tire
Funnily enough, DeadSkunk was the source of the NB wheels. I'll hit him up.
The instructions with mine say new or slightly used steel wheel with inflated tire. Maybe it isn't really that critical. I don't know if it's possible to go back to the pre calibration values, and used professionally balanced wheels are pretty close so I don't want to screw it up.
