My best experience towing with an XJ was pretty much the same.  I borrowed my uncles heavy bobcat trailer.  It pulled fine 4 hours away (70mph highways) to pick up a 85 Shelby charger.  The ride back turned into a 6+ hour white knuckle ride on back roads because anything over 55mph and the tail was in charge of the dog.  I actually had to adust the surge brakes way in so a light touch of the brake would actually over acuate the trailer brakes and sort of stretch the rig out. This would usually get the trailer sway in check quickly and is a great trick to stop sway if you have electric brakes and a trailer starts wagging you.  With that load there was simply no way to end up with enough tongue weight to keep the trailer stable and the front of the rig close enough to the ground for comfort.  It was really a stupid and dangerous stunt.

I LOVED the XJ otherwise.    The trouble is the things that make it good at being an XJ make it really bad for towing.

I love my XJ, I would not tow with it.

Agreed. The XJ has a lot of things going for it, but towing is not one of them.
