Love all the political slant...
Can we keep the political buzzwords and discussions of the dudes potential beliefs out of this? It's going to really muddy what is an important lesson and discussion that should be had.
I'm concerned people who may not be participating in the conversation will dismiss the positive reinforcement of good safety practices based on those comments being intermingled with unrelated things that may alienate the very people that need to hear that message.

She's not just a Youtuber, that's Hailie Deegan. She's a legit racing driver who's a full-timer in the NASCAR truck series. Honestly, I'm a little surprised she would even get into one of those cars. She has a lot more to lose than most of those folks. I guess she figured it would be a fun lark.
I'm sorry it upsets you but, I think it's relevant. It was called the freedom factory to be a place free from the "tyranny" of basic safety measures. He then held a super spreader event during the lockdown. During this event a man doing a burnout competition in shorts and a hoodie received 3rd degree burns when a radiator exploded.
Afterwards Cleetus issued a statement that everybody had fun and nobody got hurt.

There is a pattern here.
I've always been kind of neutral on Cleetus, interesting cars but I don't really love the style. Hallie Deegan is a real deal race car driver, she knows real cars and I am surprised she would race in those. Based on that video I think she is lucky to be just bruised up.

I think you have a point. If he really said that (I'm not clicking) then he definitely applied it to "roll bars installed backwards".
Gosh that's terrible

My first thought wasn't "for fun" but was "for publicity."

As the resident ABS engineer, I'd like to see the data from that "ABS glitch".
Driver said it seemed to go into "ice mode," IIRC it was a Ford Focus?
Was the car completely stock down to the tires? Or like most of the Twins that have trouble with "ice mode" they are on wider stickier tires, with aftermarket suspension, and more HP through tunes/exhaust mods?
The engineers calibrate the cars for ABS in a stock configuration I'm assuming. I'll defer to the resident expert, but I'm pretty sure it's safe to say those same parameters aren't going to work well on a highly modified car with different tires.

Please stop trying to tie whatever you think his politics are to how he handles motorsports safety. Great way to paint people with a broad brush.

That's the theory, but lawyers exist because as soon as accidents happen, those same independent-thinking adults suddenly decide that other people's decisions put them in that situation...

Don't know. It's hard to find information on it now, which suggests that things have gotten serious from a legal or technical perspective or both...it happened at an event in Toronto last year run by a club called PITL. There was also an online fundraiser for the driver I can't find now either.
Hailee was smart enough to use the pool noodles at least. And I heard a comment in on of Cleetus's short update videos about him having to do a few safety things to the cars to satisfy Bristol, so they must have signed off on the cars. Bristol is only a half mile track so they don't get up to any huge speeds, especially on street tires with no grip. And ultimately its a bunch of racing by adults of sound mind. Most if not all drivers had raced before and all were familiar with high performance vehicles so I say let them make their own minds up about the level of risk they are comfortable with.
I've watched a lot of his videos and his on-screen persona is definitely: "red-neck car guy up for anything." He hardly ever mentions safety because (in my opinion) it takes away from his persona, and thus viewership, and thus, revenue. I don't think that he's dumb, or that the "red neck bit" is him in real life, but I think that he's sold his soul as so many YT personalities have, in the desperate search for increased revenue.
Those quick to associate his red-neck persona with being a flag-waving voter is a leap that has nothing to do with anything. He's just found an on-screen character that attracts many viewers. Whether they're of equal mindset, who knows.
I do by the way, completely agree that setting examples that safety stuff is for wimps who aren't true Americans, as is somewhat insinuated, is something that could come back and bite him.

That's one of the crowds that he caters to, and his subscription count proves that it's working.

The car was a Golf R, I was not at that event but attended others before and after it. They finished out the season using that same venue which I'm guessing was availble during Covid as the majority of the events that would need that parking were not running or at reduced capacity. I don't really think this years struggles to find a venue were related to the accident but only the organizers would know that. There were changes made after the accident which is good and it was a shame that car ran into a parked vehicle rather than just wrecking itself when the DRIVER lost control of the car.
Unfortunatley we don't seem to have the wide open sites in the GTA and surrounding area that other groups get to enjoy and because of that the courses are tighter and the risk is higher. It's something to keep in mind when you sign up and run at these events and who you choose to do that with.
In reply to Racebrick :
Our track is all about safety but I watched a guy at another short track hit so hard that his unbuckled helmet came off his head and out the missing windshield. Then he got out in traffic and he had jeans and a cotton T shirt on. No one seemed too concerned. That was the same track where you could check for cars and drive your hauler into the infield without stopping the hotlaps.
I skimmed Finnegan and Deegans video.
Yes, they knew what they were getting into and yes, these were slow Crown Victories but you have amateurs involved with no training and professional's racing to win.
I wonder if Halley thinks her appearance fee was worth it.

Re: ABS glitch, both my 2001 GMC van and my 2009 Mazda had bad wheel speed sensor wires at one time or another. Both of them would go full ice mode on dry pavement occasionally. Both at only under about 5 mph, not a big deal right. That is precisely the speed that I enter a garage, I have puckered.
Please explain.
Sorry for the thread jack.
People are saying 'he's not really like that, it's just a character.'
That's worse. You see how that's worse right? His viewers believe that's who he is so in the end it doesn't really make a difference. But if he actually knows better and is just pretending to be a backwoods idiot, that's worse.
I'm in the, they are all adults camp. No outrage from me.
In any other country, they would be racing 3-wheeled jitneys in the dirt without any safety equipment.
Meh.

I'd heard from a few different competitors that the reason was that the venue owners were suddenly worried about the risk of something like that accident repeating in the next season, but that's rumors...I also don't know what really happened in the crash. I've heard too many stories from drivers who know what they're doing about ABS glitches to think they're not real, but blaming the ABS could also make a convenient excuse...

Meh.
The issue is that those other countries don't have a legal system that will keep people from racing those 3-wheeled jitneys in the dirt if someone gets killed doing it, the US does...
I think you guys are looking at the "cages" the wrong way here. Yes, they absolutely could be better, there's no rear bracing member or diagonal on the rollbar. There is however a harness bar, some added rollover protection and a door bar for anti intrusion. I'd rather have a "sketchy" doorbar in a pileup like that than a questionable rear braced rollbar.
