I got my original one after lusting after a Audi S4 all during high school. Then, the WRX came over here in 2002, and offered similar performance, immensely better reliability, and was half the price. It took me until 2005 to get my hands on one, but it was worth the wait. I traded that one in to get the nicer 2009, but I've been a Subaru owner ever since.

I'm really surprised at all the Subaru hate on here. I figured this site would be much more receptive to a car that can pretty much compete in most popular (and some unpopular) motorsports for not a whole lot of cash. Yes, they make them uglier every year, but have you guys looked at other manufacturers? They are all doing it too.

Case in point: Honda. Seriously, WTF is going on with their design team? All they make right now are extremely ugly cars. And the Civic Si, the darling dream car of all the ricers in the world, is about the same money as a base WRX and is much less of a car. Yeah, I went there. And don't get me started on the metal beak-styling of Acura. I have no clue what's going on there.

Troof!! The new acuras look like parrots with a broken beak, that horrific turd of the Accord crosswagonthingy makes my soul cry, Aveos look like a furby on steroids and im pretty sure if I have to look at one more PT cruiser, Im gonna end up on the nightly news.

there is more truth in this thread than any 1 man can handle

Personally, I hate 'em. They took one of the cleanest, meanest sedans (and a jaw-droppingly gorgeous wagon) and turned them into something fat and dull looking. Seriously, you'd need F-350-sized wheels and tires to match the scale of those wheelarches on the current legacy.

They gave the Legacy the same treatment as BMW did with the E39 - perfection to butt-ugly, and purely out of the desire to change for change's sake.

You guys keep confusing "ugly" with "hate".
You just agreed with most of the posts here when you said "Yes, they make them uglier every year". The question, whether it's Subaru or Honda or anyone else, is why? I know compromises have to be made in the development of an automobile, but most of the offensive lines on these new cars have nothing to do with that, ie - the new Acura grille/beak/shnoz.

Again, did not read anything but your response, so maybe its been said..

But all the ugly cars i own were CHEAP. REAAAAALLLLY cheap. Anywhere from $100 to $1000 IN TOTAL.

Even my cars that SOME might call ugly, 06 Magnum and 01 Insight, i paid $4600 and $3900 for.

When i think about spending 10-15K on a car, i think about Porsche Boxsters and 968s in very good condition.

When i think about spending $25k, well, honestly, i dont, but if my Magnum is $5k of pretty and a Boxster is $10k or pretty, $25k of pretty is WAAAAAAY prettier than an STi that you cant actually get for $25k.

I dont hate them, but i agree they took a very good thing and butchered it.

The current legacy looks BEST in Outback form with huge tires and ride height. To me, thats symptomatic of whats wrong with the styling. When a car looks BEST when its imitating an SUV, thats wrong.

On the other hand, when a Rav4 looks best super slammed on 20" wheels, i dont find that so offensive.

No offense, of course, but to some of us here what you paid for your subarus is a really good start on a mortgage we wish we had.

I think, for all the coverage GRM's print side gives to racing that in all honesty is very expensive despite being grassroots, most of us active folk on the forum are personifying the CHEAP part of grassroots.

I can see what you're saying here. For a play-around car, they are very expensive. I use mine to go to work, and since I have to be at work no matter what it's doing outside, I wanted to get something that's AWD, yet fun to drive. I've had plenty of cheap daily drivers, and it's no fun when you have to wrench on it just to get to work. Been there, done that, never want to do that again. Yes, paying payments sucks, but for something that I know will get me to and from work with little drama, has a warranty, and still put a smile on my face, it's worth it to me. I have other toys to play with that are WAY cheaper (like my Trans Am and my $100 CSX future Challenge Car) so I don't start making a racecar out of the DD.

The older (and yes, better looking) ones are getting very cheap, but the issue with those is that it's a used performance car. I've seen plenty of these on the used market that have been abused horribly and sold "stock". But the good thing is that they are cheap and make great racecar fodder even if they aren't the most reliable for a daily driver anymore. And that's why I like the fact that GRM has one in their fleet of project cars.

I agree with SilverFleet.

I have been using a WRX as my daily driver, over one of my favorite driver's roads, for the last six years. I have never owned a car that is more fun to drive every day. And it's even more fun when it's wet or icy, something that I can't say about any other car that I have owned.

It has also been incredibly reliable over 120,000 hard miles.

This too. We can settle the issue now. I'll add this to the GRM Forums life facts:

Miatas are the answer, Subarus are ugly, P71's are the best DD, everyone needs a ZAV, and hotlinking is great!

Agreed!

And yes, someone "fit" one in a WRX once. It worked well until the stock rear diff melted itself.

Edit: found a pic!!! Hotlinked because it's good for the internet:

More than once.

There was actually a bugeye at Import Alliance this past weekend with an LS2 stuffed in it.

I cried.

Maybe a new WRX is an incredibly intelligent and inspired choice for some people. I don't know. Everybody's situation is different. In any case, it doesn't change the fact that this car is an abomination. It is almost as bad as the Homer Simpson designed car.

It's not uglier than the new MS3. I literally become angry when thinking about how ugly they made that car.

I don't hate the new Subarus, I would drive the E36 M3 out of one...from the cockpit, where I can't see how ugly it is And let's face it...we'd all take a fast/ugly car over a pretty/boring/slow car.

The new ms3 makes me sad. The only thing they got right, is the part where they put a hood scoop on it.

Yeah, they really screwed up the new MS3. The last one was a very nice looking car. The new one looks like a bucked-tooth cartoon caracter from the movie Cars. Hopefully they'll pull a one-year model refresh like Subaru did after the 2008 WRX was a massive failiure.
