Like the Petty experience at NASCAR tracks, motorcycle rentals at Deal's Gap and others. In what universe could a contractor operate a strip of salt at Bonneville where customers could come and drive their junk as fast as they wanted? 5 miles of "track" well away from the main line, contractor maintains the area and easement onto the area, timing lights, a little PA speaker "Joe Scuzzinti in his 2017 Sienna hits 112 at the 3 mile light". Sure insurance but that's probably less than the horror stories. Big thorough waiver. No first aid except EMS available by 911 call. You break it (the salt) you fix it (which Nurburg does, right?). So a potential customer may spend $99 to get on but may spend $3k to get home.
Is 2020 too late in history to make this happen? Could it ever happen? What changes would you make to help it happen?

Just do a roach coach man. Pull up, rope off, and call yourself a "participant". How fast can a roach coach go?
You'd have to make arrangements with the authority that oversees the salt flats, and I imagine pay some pretty hefty fees.

Unless you offer to donate somehow. Maybe cover expenses, and offer anything in excess as an offering to the club.
I thought this thread was about outstanding snack stands at famous racetracks.
I would love this. In my car or a rental.
Did I just type that out loud?

I thought it was going to be about setting up snack stands at various windy roads. Tacos on Highway 1. Ice cream at the top of some cool mountain road. Sandwich truck at Tail of the Dragon? I could sell grilled cheese sandwiches next to the windy road near my house.

Now I want to open a food truck on 129 that sells fried gator tail sandwiches.
Me too, thinking great eats on route 66... lol
Unlikely those in charge of the salt flats would allow that. Heck they have talked about banning racing altogether there as I recall.
It is always about money and liability, if you have enough of the former you can mitigate the latter and people will listen to your plans.

Favorite Road America Food Memory: Corner 14, bought early morning brat, eating brat near garbage can, watching practice, look down to toss paper, and see a crumpled up $20 bill at the top of the garbage.
Last bite of brat tasted better at that point.

I thought you could just drive on the salt flats as fast as you wanted at anytime. That's what the guy at the motel in Elko told me anyways.
I drove by on a Banzai road trip home and it looked like I could just start driving where I pulled over. Not like there was a fence.
Best track food has got to go to the breakfast burritos at high plains raceway.
Next best would be burgers at Nelson ledges.
I know this has nothing to do with the original post, just wanted to share.

I always thought the drag strip at Gulfport, MS had some damned good food, but it's possible the experience was enhanced by fumes.

My understanding from the various stories and videos I've seen over the years is that Bonneville is open, and more or less "at your own risk" place already.
Setting up timing equipment means you're telling people what part of the place they should be using, which sounds like a lot of liability.
Even if you built this out with an app, and let people run wherever, (Salt Flat Tycoon Free (contains ads)) I'd be afraid of liability for encouraging bad behavior.
Regardless, I think your first move is to hire an attorney.
Mmmm, good breakfast biscuits n gravy at VIR....
By far the best track food is the rice bowls at NCM.

can confirm, the only way to make a RA brat better is to serve it with a side of money. berkeley, they're so good.
I'd been thinking about kicking the meat habit for a while. I was lucky enough to have an invite to a corporate event at NOLA Motorsports Park with Xtreme Experience. I was there early enough for a mingle and snack/lunch. I couldn't find anything really appealing, but settled on mini crab cakes and, I think, fried something-okra probably. While I was eating, I decided to drop meat for a bit. Now, this wasn't because the food was bad. It was more a case of me thinking about driving a supercar on a race track, and considering the other sorts of things I could choose to do.

They do make a great burger, but I can't eat that kind of stuff for lunch and remain alert for the afternoon sessions.

I haven't raced there for some years now, but Hallett is owned by family members. I was there for a visit last summer.
