Here's what I got to repair it with. Photobucket

Anyone had experience with a keensert? I'll post results and take pics of installation.

I tried searching for a page with a DIY, but I just noticed Google's removed the `don't return results from domain' selection on the advanced search. Without being able to screen out .com, .co and .biz, all I get is 540834587334857238975 results from people trying to sell me one of the damn things.

Sigh.

Looks something like a Heilicoil. If so, you drill an oversized hole, thread the hole with a tap, and screw it in with a special insertion tool.

yeah u drill it out, and tap to the OD and screw it in. then knoxk the stakes on it in and its good to go. I'll stick some re thread locker on for good measure too.

The hole you drill for a keensert is generally larger than the normal tap drill size of the normal thread. In other words (using general sizes here as I haven't looked it up) a 1/4-20 keensert would take a 3/8-16 tapped hole to screw into. The tap drill size for 3/8-16 is 5/16. You would need to drill at least 1/64 to 1/32 larger hole then tap it with a normal 3/8-16 tap. The minor diameter on the external threads of a keensert are larger than they would be on a bolt so you have to drill the hole slightly larger so that the threads in the hole don't come to a point.

I found this site with with the tap drill info for metric keenserts. http://www.newmantools.com/kee.htm#knmlink

Also be very careful when tapping in the tabs, they bend very easily. Use a punch and lightly tap them in one at a time. There is no need for a thread locker compound. The tabs give you a mechanical lock much stronger than any thread locker.

Good luck and pray you never have to take it back out.

Fixed. Pulled the head to drill as the 31/64th" bit was a bit too long. Wow that was easy!!

Good work. Cheaper than finding a new head, right?

Probably not, counterflow heads are a giveaway. Cheaper then a headgasket though ;)

Nothing more satisfying than averting disaster.

I was just considering a G60 head for about $50 to get the smaller diameter valve stems, perception of higher flow. Not worth it Paul?

Not for him, he'd just boost the crap out of it!

Haha, for me it would be for a NA motor.

I think everything hydro lifter already has the 'small' stems, only early solid ones have the 8mm. The only difference in the G60 head is that it comes off easier due to a Corrado's inherent nature to part itself out.

Ah, you're right. I forgot it was just an 8v with funny pistons or something.

MSC sell keeneserts there great in places you can't aford for a fit to back out like regular helicoils do. On a side noe helicoil make some whith a seraded buttom 2 coils to lock in better but known buys them as there more $.

Actually, IIRC from my head porting days, all counterflow heads (including Corrado) had the 8mm stems. ABA's had the 7mm stems, and it was a semi popular upgrade to put the ABA guides and valves in the counterflow heads when building one up.

I can't remember anymore, those heads just go to 'the pile' and never return from China.

I like the Keen serts, but they are so expensive (or at least the kit with the tool is)

After having a Helicoil back out of the Fiat's head, I used EZ-Loks. I was very impressed.

well the car is running great now that i got the new lower timing gear and correct cam gear with the new tensioner and belts.. And here goes my luck, now the transmission that I installed less than 2000miles is acting up. it won't pull until 4k in any forward gear. Reverse works. Any idea? I'm looking at replacing it with a '93 Talon TSI or a '96 Integra
