75! oops!
This started life as the same car.
This really nice fellow named John Edwin Mason took those photos. Go to his site for a bit more insight into his art.

And another billion.
do NOT cut the roof off. the coupe is more rare than the ragtop today.
do NOT listen to foxtrapper. he recently had a head trauma.
do NOT flip your grandpa's car unless he's cool with it.
DO give it a proper cleaning from top to bottom.
DO give it a tune-up.
DO cruise in style.
these are opinions, specifically MY opinions, and you do not have to share them.

Agree with all points. Very inconsiderate to flip a car that's been given to you, especially since they could sell it in a heartbeat.
OSULemon wrote: There was a '72 LTD in the Ultimate Track Car Challenge, no? I couldn't find any more info on it.
It was the car I posted above. The USS Enterprise now known as MILF Hunter Lite and painted up with Miller Lite parody logos. They ran it the year before last. Sanford and Son truck was there as well.
I'd rock it. Drive it on nice days. There's some brake/ suspension mods you can make to keep the nice ride but actually give you not-scary stopping and handling. We put mustang cobra brake son our '75 LeMons car (That tuna55 mentioned above) and it stopped very nicely. Doubled up the front sway bars, cut about an inch off the front coils and clamped the back ones.
There are some cheap improvements to be made to the 400M. 351 Cleveland heads fit and give higher compression and better breathing. A cam will let you utilize that improved pumping ability. a 4 bbl manifold would be on my list, just to shed some weight and give you access to the ubiquitous and easy-to-tune 600- 650 edelbrock carb. Then if you want to get real trick find a set of shorter gears for the rear- it should be a 9" in that '72, so you'll have a buffet of choices- something in the low-3's should match that slightly-hotted engine nicely now.
Dual exhaust (headers would be nice, too, if you can find 'em or make 'em) and you should be looking at a solid 250-300 crank HP for under $1000 in parts (possibly much less if you get some used part scores). Wax it, clean up the inside, and have fun.
Or sell me the beast as-is for $500 and let me play with it. ;-)

OSU if you do decide to pass on the freebie and would rather help your Grandfather sell it I'd be interesting in buying it. I have a green on green 4 door with the 351c, but a blue on blue 2 door would be great....I'd love to have it.
i saw a 2-door LTD a couple weeks ago, metalflake orange, mild lift, 22" rims. it looked berkeleying great and i totally would've rocked it. i wish i could've gotten a pic.

Except they're not selling it in a heartbeat.
My father once gave me a repossessed Firebird. I drove it for a month while I worked on it, flipped it, used the money to buy another car, flipped that, and went back to school.
I believe the grandparents are giving up the car because it will have value to their grandson, not necessarily in and of itself but possibly for something he needs more. I'm sure they would be fine with whatever he did with it. It's not doing them any good sitting in the garage. It will do their grandson good with whatever he chooses to do.
Anything with either landau or faux wood trim for free is a win. I'd clean that beast up and cruise all over. Who cares what other people think, maybe grow a handlebar mustache and furry chest to drive the ladies crazy.
go thru it, good (read safe) brakes/steering/suspension, give it a little tune, drive it and enjoy it, take gramps for the odd rip and enjoy the hell out of it

Don't 400M = 351C 2V heads. At least the later ones?

I should have specified, the 4V heads. Now that aluminum heads are somewhat cheap, the old hi-po goodies go for chump change.
I finally got my FTP stuff sorted out. Here's a pic of my customer's '71 LTD convertible:
When I have some time (ha!) I'll put a page together for what all we did.
When I was in grad school, the motor pool had 74 LTDs and Gran Furies. The Gran Furies held the road better, but the LTD was a cruising machine. The AC-defroster was stellar, but that would be an old R-12 system. I think our cars had a 351. The worst company truck I ever had was an early 1980s Ford F-250 with 400 engine in it. An absolute dog of an engine.
