This will be hard to explain without being able to draw it, but instead of the two "kinks" before the decreasing radius sweeper.............what if you let them still get a good acceleration run, then more of a hard left/right, to slow them down for the sweeper..........then they will be trying to accelerate/maintain in the beginning and then slow down more?

I don't know, like I said, I've never auto-x'd.

The second layout looks good. And it don't see why you couldn't have 2 cars on the course. I would guess a good split would be to send the second car when the first car finishes the long slalom.

In reply to z31maniac:

The big issue is that with higher speed comes higher risk. Especially sending cars into a decreasing radius corner with a very high entrance speed. From my experience, decreasing radius corners usually have more people spinning out vs other elements.

It's also somewhat of an insurance thing too. We're supposed to keep speeds below a certain MPH to limit the chances of an incident.

No time for it now, but with LFS (Live for Speed) racing game on the PC, you can design AutoX courses with the course editor, then test them with a variety of cars in the sim. I designed courses for an extremely small lot, tested them in LFS, and when we actually setup and ran the course, it was spot on.

That's why I said put a hard right/left BEFORE the decreasing radius, so there entry speed is slower in a more spin-prone location, but everyone still gets to mash on the loud pedal for a bit?

I'd actually prefer to run it in reverse. Makes the paddock issue, less of one. However, I like it, as in, I'd enjoy driving it in either direction.

The issue is that our antique timing system only handles 1 car at a time...

Thanks for the additional thoughts, everybody. If the weather holds out on Sunday, I'll let you know how it goes.

Last Saturday (rain date) we ran the course in this configuration. I ran it pretty consistently in the mid 59s in a C Stock NB Miata on street tires. No idea of what my top speed was. FTD was a Caterham R500 on Hoosier R6s with a mid 53, followed by an STR MR-S on Rivals less than 0.2 behind.

Overall it went pretty well, though we had a few off-courses. On the esses following the first 180, I added some leaders to the 2nd and 3rd gates, but people seemed to miss the first one. Some people missed gates on the back side of the course through the transition. I thought the sight lines were pretty good, but I guess not good enough.

We didn't have an excessive number of cones. I opened up the Box a little from what is shown there, but we still had a few spins, at least partly due to the cold temps. However, the Box was the least-favorite part of the course - even though I thought it drove fine.

We had some issues with the stop box not being long enough, and that diagonal stripe proved to be a hump in the paving I am definitely going to avoid next time.

In general, though, everybody was pretty happy and had fun. Some people thought it was faster than it looked, and some people thought it was slower. Thanks to everybody for the input. I will definitely ask for critique in the future.

Glad it went well.

Everybody hates Chicago boxes.
