Who is Daddy Dave, and why should I care about Goliath?
Not wanting to be a jerk, but this is just another drag strip accident like there are hundreds a year....why is this special?

This.
While it's been decades since I set foot on a drag strip, that has got to be the sketchiest setup outside of racing on the highway. RVs nosed up to the starting line? People wandering in and around the lanes a few feet from the cars? It's a good thing it was only a one person crash far down the track. A blower explosion could mean multiple fatalities. Looks like I won't be drag racing in the next few decades either if this is the current state of things.
Edit: Just saw the one with the lightning in the background. Because drag cars do great in sudden downpours, and the middle of an open field surrounded by metal is always where you want to be in an electrical storm.
I assume this is from the Street Outlaws show on cable TV?

that's definitely not the state of things at any track i've ever run at. even the little backwoods track(that's getting turned into a high $ facility, ) had people back away from the cars, tall fences, and there is no way you can get behind the starting line when anyone is staged.
wtf is up with the people running on the track? GTFO of the way of the safety crews and let them do their jobs.
In reply to patgizz:
The one episode I've saw they were running on some two lane road behind an industrial park. I kind of doubt there was any safety people there.
They couldn't have asked for better timing of that flash of lightning in the distance.

did you watch the video? they're at a dragstrip with walls, tree, and grandstands.
that was significant alright

I did. From my small knowledge of this group of people they don't participate in organized events.
But no one mentioned if Dave is OK - Just looked online - in the hospital, serious concussion - hope he makes a full recovery and builds another awesome car.
Cheesy TV show or not, those guys are serious motorsports enthusiasts and I hate to see one of our own get hurt.
I don't know who Daddy Dave is and worried the Goliath in question was yours. Glad it wasn't.
I have to admit that I like the show and hope that Dave recovers and builds another car.

everything they do is an "organized event", this happened on a legit track on a street "no prep" night, which means the track is supposed to be as slick and unpredictable as a public street... yeah, 2500+hp on a surface with no grip is always a good idea... i can't believe people actually like this kind of thing.

For me, admittidly not a big drag race fan, I find it far more interesting then races on a super sticky track. The lack of traction seems to add an interesting challenge to the races, normal drag racing always seems a bit to "figured out" to me.
I suspect it also might make it a bit more dangerous, which probably would not be to bad, but on that show they run down streets with light poles and such!
Racing on a rediculously sticky surface just seems silly to me. Should they run track cars on a super sticky track also?

This thread is confusing. Wishing Daddy Dave a speedy recovery, whomever he is. Not sure if Goliath is his dog (Davey and Goliath) or his car.
The Street Outlaws do race and test at fully organised tracks regularly. The show is built around street racing, but the streets they race on are completely shut down and run under very strict conditions.
The show is about street racing, if you don't like this, don't watch it.
I really enjoy the show even if it is very contrived, like all reality shows.

Yeah, those RV's just look like they're up against the starting line, but they're actually quite a distance away.
I too clicked on this thinking it was one of aussie's cars (the MG?). Good to hear the driver wasn't too badly injured. Looked like a big one, but also typical of drag racing wrecks, which is reason why those cars have such stout cages. When things go bad, they often go really bad.
The seat belt mount wasn't exactly the best setup. However I know it's still allowed by many organizations. Surprised he'd have both shoulder harnesses tied into one tab, when he had a harness bar available.
I agree sachilles, all that money into a car and they cheap out on the harness attachments, I wonder whose arse will get reamed for that one

Yeah, if you're talking about the track I think you're talking about, and I think you are, they WILL stop things if there are people crowding near the starting line or leaning on the retaining wall.
I sure hope that when they re-open it is still a cool place to hang out... $12 entry and quick run-throughs and half decent chili dogs.
