I took out the bolts but can't seem to split the transmission. Will apply some heat tomorrow.

KA24 is a great idea - will be my backup plan but I'd really like to get it on the road simply and cheaply. We'll see ...

Ok so finally got back from vacation and got a few minutes in the garage. I haven't been able to split the transmission yet. The manual suggested hitting with a hammer ... but I was thinking what about turning by hand? Sure enough I can turn it over by hand just find in all gears? This would seem to indicate its not stuck in two gears? Interestingly if I turn the driveshaft in neutral the input shaft still turns - is that right???? thanks again.

In case anyone cares. TR8Todd called me yesterday,and told me to come see the car across the street from where he was working. There sit a near mint looking 77 Datsun B210 in all its 70's Datsun teal glory. It was remarkably clean,and the seller claimed an original 20k miles. I tend to believe him,but who really knows. It is a 4 speed with an A14 engine,and the seller was very firm at $5500 which I think is way too high,but what do I know. If anyone wants more details,and pics I can get them. This car is in Southeastern,MA,and claims to be a local car that has sat in a garage for quite some time. I can believe it,but I still think it is over priced.

I've seen a car of a very similar description at Japanese day at Larz Anderson. I wonder if it's the same one (from like 3 years ago)

20K miles on a '77, and clean, complete AND don't forget, it IS the racing step-brother to the 510, a multiple champion-winning car. Modified like the 510, of course. I think the price isn't bad. Post it on the Classic side and see what feedback you get.

I saw one on vacation on Northern AZ that was half of what you describe, and was all over it, trying to get my brother to buy it, or hold it for me until I could get it, somehow, back to Ct.

Clean, with those miles....it'll move very soon.

Hey Chris the car you are talking about is a dead ringer for this one,but the car you are talking about belongs to a friend of mine in Albany,NY,and has a weber or two on it. This isn't the same car,but looks the same.

Chris you are in East Providence right? If so this car is in Taunton,MA just off of rt 44,and maybe 20-25 minutes away from E Pro. I went from where the car is to E Pro yesterday in about 25 minutes.

Yeah just took a look at the spare Lada Niva 4spd I have and it doesn't turn in neutral which makes sense. Still can't get the Datsun transmission apart. Can't seem to get it into reverse either.

Time to break out the plasma cutter

Wondering out loud: is therre anyway to carefully pressurize the case to get it apart. Either with air or fluid.

Or, heat cycle it. Pack it in ice, or if you have a big enough freezer, freeze it, then apply MILD heat along the case "seams" BTW, thought of this, because with an aircooled bug engine, you have to freeze the crank, then boil the bearing to get the center one in place. My parents thought I was nuts until I showed them the shop manual. Though the manual said "boil in motor oil" which I though was nuts, (boom, fire, etc..) and boiled it in water instead. So maybe getting some contraction and expansion will get the case apart.

I'm in North Providence, but my "local"/regular indoor skatepark is in Taunton-I drive on that part of 44 every Tuesday night. I've probably driven by the damn thing!!!

Odd that there are two similar examples in good condition left in the rust belt
