If you're not opposed to modding your car, I would stick with a base c5 over a z06. The main differences are the cam, suspension, and gearing. If you're at all interested in building the engine or upgrading the suspension, get the base c5 and use the $10,000 you save for wheels, tires, suspenion, brake, engine and exhaust work. If you're looking to keep your car stock, get the c5z, and have fun! Just be sure you're really in the market to buy one before you test drive. Once the vette bug bites you, almost everything else will feel inadequate (took me about a month to fall back in love with my GTO again).

More like 15k for c5s with c5zs around 25k. At least that was how it was a few months ago when I was looking. +/- 3-4k depending on miles and condition.

I've seen several C5Zs that have gone for under $20k...

I've noticed that too. Prices for 01s/higher mileage cars seem to be more than a super low-mileage one down in TX or similar.

I'm in Ypsi. I think a year or so ago I had a line on one from someone in the Corvette Club, but other priorities edged it out.
