For aesthetic and period correct reasons, I like the sound system that is in the Molvo. It all works and looks like it belongs. The issue I have is that both CD and Cassette tapes are a thing of the past.
What would be nice is if there were a way to plug in my phone to play tunes or audio books. I did not see any audio inputs on the rear of the deck.
Anyone know if these can be hacked to accept inputs from a phone?

There was a guy over on miata.net that could add 3.5mm jack for a headphone cable to the stock miata head units. I think there's still a write up buried over there. I'll go look.
Write up, more than a little out of date

I believe that the answer for plugging in the phone is there. Thanks for the link. The only downside is that it requires that the CD player be removed. Not sure why.
Going to read it a few more times and digest the contents.

A friend of mine builds and sells an adapter to allow an aux input from a phone, MP3 player, etc. https://redirad.com/collections/fm-product/products/redirad-fm

If the hightest fidelity isn't required you can get a bluetooth to FM adaptor. It's basically a little FM transmitter that plugs into the lighter or whatever 12v source you can hide in a less obtrusive spot. Your phone "bluetooths" to the device and it transmits to a selectable FM frequency on your radio. I got a cheap one a few years back off amazon for about $15. You're welcome to try it out. It works. Maybe more expensive ones sound better.
The reason you have to lose the CD player to patch an aux in into the stock deck is because it's the only external input on that deck, designed to accept input from the stock CD player. I did it 25 years ago so I could hook up my Discman. Maybe you could splice an aux line in just for fun.
You have a speaker-level output from the stock stereo. You could add a hidden BT receiver somewhere with an amp of its own and switch the signal going to the speakers. Basically, two separate sound systems sharing the same set of speakers. One of the NVX "one knob" receivers I like to use along with a small power amp would work, and the NVX can also switch between BT and a wired aux input.
Ah. You wire the CD player to that aux in and feed the output into the stock deck. Voila. No extra amp needed. Get the right DIN connectors and it can be a plug-in setup.

I have one but could not get it to work.
When I looked into it for my Miata, I found a BT connected amp. And it will work for both your tunes and as a hands free phone.

I put a performance audio system in my '60 El Camino. Of course, I wanted the stick chromed-out unit to stay in the dash.
The answer was a new head unit that hides in the glovebox, with a remote. It's super easy to control the tunes with the remote while driving.
You could put any modern system you want in the trunk with a remote. Extra points if you find performance speakers to install in the original factory positions in the headrests!

Already have the headrest speakers installed; became addicted to them when I bought my first Miata. They are aftermarket upgrades. Bought from MOSS and if I look back in my build thread I have nothing good to say about the fit but they do sound good.
