ek auto once quoted me $2000 from budapest to new york or florida. I bet you could find roll on roll off shipping a bit cheaper out of slovenia or italy but you'd have to pay someone to drive it there. (i do know people in the area). For me the cost of shipping is just a touch too high to make it worthwhile.
It'd be a hoot to show up at a local auto-x in a 126p though.

Are there still New 126 Motors and Gearboxes available
A few years ago they were real cheap .
I have an old 1960 Fiat 500 and the upgrade to a 650cc motor would help ,
since the Fiat 500 motor is in a box with missing parts its easier to get another motor but not many Fiat 500s or Polski 126 in the USA

"new" motor? probably not. at least i dont know where to look. but i do have a very good mechanic friend in Hungary that could box you up a good running 650cc polski motor and send it your way
(trans too, if needed)
have you seen the wheeler dealers episode?
apologies for the thread jack

Bill: No worries. I enjoy crazy cars! Hell I own a R8!
After further review, I think I could live with a VW Type 1 box with the right gear ratios.
If I can get a 0.89 fourth gear with a ring gear in the 3.8 range and the R8 sports some 155/60R15 that puts 80 miles per hour at 4,150 RPM. If I'm throwing in a more modern power plant that should be fine. That similar to my 1.6 Miata, IIRC. The original engine in the Renault had peak power at right at 4,100 or 4,200 RPM and I assumed a redline around 5,000 to 5,500 RPM
Rancho has reman ones for $820 shipped. So I'll have to figure out if there was a factory box with the gears I want or if I'll need to special order one.
Pick an engine and call up Kennedy for an adaptor kit.
There is a 3.83 R&P on the later 70s bugs so that is not a problem , and a .89 4th.....
only thing will be the gap from 2nd to 3rd , but 3rd and 4th are removable so can be changed if you need to ,
There are also a few 2nd hand Kennedy adapters around for Pinto engines as this was the choice for buggy motors in the 1980s , look up "Pinto Beans"
When you call Rancho ask for Mike , wait until next week as the VW Bug In races are Sunday and he is probably busy until then,
Hope that helps ........................

So I got a line on a Kennedy kit for a Zetec to Type 1 kit, so we will see what happens there.
And then there is this :
https://madison.craigslist.org/pts/d/volkswagen-irs-transaxle/6573297646.html
It has the right ring gear. Is there any reason not to us it?
In reply to RossD :
I know you can flip the older transmissions, but I'm not sure if that one can be. I also don't know if it matters in your application.

The renault box is of a similar form, so hopefully it will fit.
It looks tight but the Zetec should fit, too
So really all this would allow me to get better gearing, better suspension (non swing arm), brake components availability, and probably 4x100 wheels.
I have a freshly rebuilt porsche g50 lsd transaxle and fresh 3.2 carrera engine. Unfortunately it's eventually going back in my 911.

You could probably fine one stateside fairly cheap from a cast-off Europa too. Come to think of it, I may know where one is located a few hours from Ross. If it’s available. If it included the bellhousing a Zetec would bolt up too.
Hang on..
The Europa is not rear engine. It's longitudal mid engine, RWD. The trans is behind the engine, unlike the VW and the 911.
What am I missing?
Is longitudal mid engine RWD acceptable? If so, I've got a FWD Subaru trans I will give you for free (side outputs, similar to the Europa).

Certain transaxle can either be flip upside down, or the ring gear flipped to the other side of the case to reverse the output direction. Its my understanding, the Subie and Audi trans have a different type of ring than a typical stick axle differential, so thats why you actually need to buy ($$) new gears to run reverse. Thanks though.
The craigslist trans you might want for the Ring and pinion as its probably the 3.83 ,
you just take everything out of that case and put it in a 2 sided case , or you can even put swing axles on it like an early bug......
there is a serial number on the trans and the letters of the serial number tell you what its got in it......
The Sadev unit arrived today.
It's a beauty. Straight cut, sequential 5spd. No LSD as they strongly recommended against that for our track width an power levels. Rated up to 200hp. Just under 10 grand if you were wondering.

Very Cool! Does a Renault bellhousing attach to it or is it a proprietary one?
I was hoping to have a mostly completed car by the time I have $10k in it!! I'm sure the transaxle is boss, however.

I received the Kennedy Engineering Products Zetec to VW Type 1 transaxle adaptor. Its a beautiful piece if kit. An unexpected feature was the 36-1 crank sensor "holes" on the back of the flywheel for the Zetec's factory crank sensor. Score!

well that puts you using a VW or Porsche gearbox , there are a couple early Renaults in England that run the VW drags , you might check out the GB websites and see if there is a write-up on them ,
Just to let you know there are 4 speed 901 Porsche gearboxs , very strong , We have had them in a few early 70s NHRA drag bugs.......and they used Datsun 240Z axles which took 250hp ,
