IIRC, the rule in california is that you have to pull over to allow the faster car to go by. Just last weekend in my RENTAL Focus (read auto), I managed to pass a ton of cars that way. Including a P-car SUV. ALL of the drivers I went by seemed quite happy to let me by- none of them had issues with it.
And driving in No-Cal is pretty awesome. The road in and out of all directions of the Anderson valley ROCK!!!!! YOU ALL WOULD LOVE THEM. Moreso that the locals are so cool with letting you by.
Anyway, pretty funny- I'd be all over him, too. And would have said- well, duh- drive faster. The speed limit IS 55 afterall.
As the owner of a BMW.. I refuse to have anything to do with most other BMW drivers. I have watched the kids grow from E36s to E46s and now E92s... while I still have my E36 Ti.. and it seems the faster the cars these same kids are buying.. the more of an asshat they are becoming.
I've noticed some people treat me like I'm a prick when I am driving my daily driver '75 BMW 2002. I find it funny.
Sometimes I feel pressure to act like an asshat when driving it just because.

on the other end, i don't think i would react that politely if someone were to try the same crap with me. given the body language, tone of voice and what was said, i'd probably started backing to keep the guy at a safe distance until an opening presented itself to either a) make an exit or b) turn the guy into roadkill and make an exit.
an MS3 will do a killer reverse donut that would do wonders for discouraging someone from "kicking my ass in my $#!tbox" no thanks, take your jorts back to the car and leave, pal
I agree that I would start rolling towards that BMW dude. Fire his attitude up even more if you try to roll over him.
I would have laughed continuously at him until he had an aneurysm.
Of course, how often do you have a camera on your random drive to record something like this happening? There's suspicion around the web that it was staged a bit...
There's lots of people who like to film their drives. I don't know... Dude's body language seemed pretty genuine to me.
Who would think to stage something that inane?
If I was going to stage something like that, I would have upped the stakes a bit.
First of all, I'd have had the BMW driver wearing Oakleys and a Bluetooth earpiece, to complete the stereotype.
I'd also have it go down as some sort of epic race that the BMW driver would get out of the car and complain about only once he clearly couldn't keep up.
But that's just me.
Checked that kid's youtube channel, I believe it's the same kid who had the angry instructor at Thunderhill.
Jason your brother must really tweak people out in that car. At least the guy is perpetuating the stereotype, don't have to feel so bad when I make fun of bimmerfiles. Also on a side note, if someone gets that close to my car in a fit of rage, they are getting KTFO.
That guy was just way pissed off that a Mazda that cost 2/3 of what his car did could kill it dead, and not break 26 times in the process. Plus the Mazda driver doesn't have to pay $1300 for a brake job...that'd be enough to set me off!
And people who drive new BMWs are, in the immortal words of Clarkson, cocks. It's true just about 99% of the time, and this guy does the 1% no favors.

You know, as a member of the BMWCCA, and the founder of a 7 series owners association, I can say that the number of cocks in BMWs is actually pretty low. It's just that they are SOOOO visible. AND, they are usually in brand new BMWs, usually 3s or X series. But most of us are not.

I have noticed that too. Just the other day I was going down the road at just about 5 over (easier to keep it at an even number an a 5) with nobody behind me for at least a mile. And the Brinks armored car pulls out in front of me. The driver and I made eye contact and he went.. forcing me to get on the brakes as he slowly proceeded to pull into traffic and then head off in the same direction I was going.. never once exceeding 5 under the limit.
That is just one experience. As soon as people spot the kidney grill on my car, They start acting like bigger asshats than most people who drive BMWs.. I like the old guys in Camry's who smoke the tyres off the line at a light to get ahead of me.. before I even start moving

Yes, that's my brother again.
No, it wasn't staged. That guy is just plain bonkers. I'm not sure why he was taping at that particular time. I think he may have been trying out a new camera mount or something.
Our theory is that the BMW driver really couldn't get around having a "lesser" car keep up with him. Still his reaction is a bit extreme considering my brother was only behind him for less than a minute and he was at least 7-8 car lengths behind him at all times.

That looks like the perfect time to lock up the front brakes and burn the back tires off. It's amazing how few people want to stand in front of a car doing a big smoky burnout.
Of course, this is from a mullet-crested hairdresser.

Quoted for truth about Northern CA roads. I've spent some time there, and it seems like everything's beautiful and twisty. Can't wait to go back.
As for the video, it's unfortunate, I suppose that it reinforces stereotypes. Then again I'm well aware of BMW driver stereotypes and it hasn't stopped me from owning 5 so far. One of the things I love about this board and the people on it is that most of us just don't care - from the Miata folks to the Boxster drivers to the old cop car owners. Makes it a nice respite from the rest of the Internet.

First, in this day I would never do what the BMW owner did for fear of getting shot. Second, I don't see any reason for it in this vid. Third, if I was the MS3 driver, I would have never stopped in the first place. When the other guy got out of his car, I would have passed him, narrowly missing him and his door. This would obviously been a mistake, since he would undoubtedly chased me. But still, I wouldn't have done what either of them did. I think it was staged also.
Yea... I would have slowed, but then passed him. Never know why a guy is coming to a halt.. could be something in front of his car.
I almost would have been tempted to sit there while he ranted and raved..

Yeah, but the BMW could have just let the Mazda go by. I have it happen all the time. Some people realize that I'm out on twisty roads to have fun. They understand that neither one of us wants me to follow closely.
Fact is that is someone catches you on a twisty road they are wanting to go faster than you, you should try to let them by, it is safer for you. If that idiot goes off and kill themselves that is not your fault. If you don't let him by he may get both of you in a wreck with an improper/dangerous pass.
If the other car is playing too, most times if I'm obviously faster they'll still let me by, then try to follow me. I think some people I think like to watch the Lotus go by and drop into the next turn.
From the video it looks like the BMW jumped onto the road in a bit of "Me first" move. The Mazda is about 2 seconds behind him the whole video. While this isn't you normal 3 seconds, it is hardly being on someones ass.
There were no hints given that said get off my ass. Much like you don't run from a bear in fear of triggering a chase response, if you are in an enthusiast style car accelerating is not going to get people to leave you alone. It will simply make them want to join in on the fun. If I want left alone or I don't want to play, I let people by. I slow to below the speed limit and and wave them by in a clear section. His "hint" was the exacts same thing you do when you are having fun; Slow down then accelerate to see if the other guy can hang.
I think this particular BMW driver needs to think how he reacts to people. He jumped on in front of someone. Then he slows down. Then he tries to take off through some very fun to drive roads. He gets pissed that he could blast away from a "E36 M3box". Then he jumps out and tell the Mazda driver he should pass him rather than riding his ass. You never gave him the ability to pass BMW driver and it looked like you were game.
BMWs don't make people pricks. But for some reason BMW does seem to attract prick drivers, I guess it is a vestige of the yuppy 80's BMW times. As an owner of a couple of "prestige" brands (including a BMW), I have found that some people write me off as a prick before I open my mouth. It is sad that guys like this have put a bad taste in some peoples mouths. Truth is I own what I own because I love those cars, I also love and own less respected brands, and would rather hear a story about rebuilding a Honda CVCC carb than about some guys new Ferrari. We aren't all pricks.

I hope nobody thinks I was teasing BMW drivers by posting this, I was actually just bored and thought I would share. I love all kinds of cars, including bimmers. To hear you'd rather talk about Honda CVCC carbs vs. Ferrari's is what attracted me to GRM. That's why I like this forum, most of you guys are down to earth....I think

As Focus-driving BMWCCA member, I've seen both ends. Snobbish M3 drivers that after being pushed thru 12 turns by a Focus 12 inches away still wouldn't give a point-by; others would email me their in-car video of my Focus pulling away from them in the esses. That's a great guy..............
If I were in the MS3, I would not have parked it - the jerk WILL move to avoid my moving car. Then let him TRY to tailgate me!
