That seems totally doable and not crazy expensive There are hybrid gas pickups that could work as a powertrain donor but hybrid diesels are pretty rare outside of big-money commercial vehicles.

That has a really low floor and its FWD with a longitudinal engine.
It would likely need a gutted/modified transfer case to push the power fwd again, but could be doable.  I'm not an expert on those things.

An Opel GT with a Porsche chassis, a turbo added VW 5cyl, and an Audi 6spd transaxle.

EDIT: So far I am into it for 4 years and $3500 with a trashed shop.

When I was driving Suzukis I dreamed of a Geo Metro pickup truck. 
I would still like to build a small hatchback car with the drivetrain from a FWD car  installed in the back, like a pre 16 Spark - the really funny looking one, with the motor and transaxle from a  2.0T Cobalt/Verano/whatever. 
 

I know those days are over for me, I just don't have that kind of energy anymore, but we'll see what happens in retirement. I might build something.

~300 HP Europa with full tube chassis, modern suspension, dry sump.  Basically the only thing Lotus would be the exterior body and glass.   Like drop the Europa body over a formula car.

On your same plane, I wanted to make a 2dr mk3 Jetta (coupe). I saw a few others struggle to do it, so haven't bothered.

MY project is a 1960 restomod El Camino powered by an LS6 and a TR6060 from a CTS-V.

Its definitely stalled. Still hoping it's not doomed. 

A Chevette with the drive train and suspension of a Miata ND2. Then add the Vauxhall Chevette HSR body kit.

I've learned I need to stick with my limits. So I don't intend to go much further than a mostly stock '66 Dart - it has most of the stock original cylinder head, stock Toyota Supra injectors and a stock Ford throttle body with a mostly stock International Harvester turbo, a mostly stock 8 3/4 rear axle and mostly stock '80 Dodge St. Regis brakes...

A well insulated house that doesn't have breezes through the plastic covered windows, has switches that are in the room of the power they control, and ceiling fans that don't explode their bulbs.

I was trying to buy a beater Jaguar FHC to drop an Acura J motor into.  Add some flares for big wheels, etc. and it would be an awesome track toy.

Then the K20 Exocet idea popped and we did that.

I also got far enough into the idea of chopping and lowering an old Bentley coupe to realize that the project was way above my both my bank account and skills.  But it would be cool to start with something like this:

I wanted to build a mid-engine "Mini"... check.

I wanted to build a mid-engine Lotus "Seven"... check.

I wanted to build a sleeper antique "truck" using a fiberglass kit car shell and a late model Corvette drivetrain with the transaxle in the rear. Alas, a self-examination of what I would do with it, what it would cost to build, and running expenses shot that down. Oh well, two out of three isn't bad.

Ever since 1976 I've wanted to build something like ether of these: Now in 8 wheeled Corvette C5/C6 front engined drivetrain and suspension versions. If only I could find DWG models or dimensions of said Corvette parts or knew someone who could design a suspension for me. They are both designed so that I could build either in my garage with simple hand tools.

I feel fortunate to be neither divorced or bankrupt after finishing the Fossil project.
