A semi-race car is sort of my long-term plan for my E30, but while keeping it STX or DSP-legal (which restricts the amount of interior removal). My current thought is to go with a simple Time-Trail legal bar, although a full cage may be considered (likely SE30 and/or BMWCCA-legal, since why bother otherwise). Either way, the car will remain stock-appearing from the outside and the window tinting should make the scoffolding less obvious to the casual on-looker.
I basically only drive the car for auto-x events now, so this wouldn't likely change much.
Use a hand held GPS for the speedo.
I drive my race car on the street around town, commute to work on nice days... my commute is all of three miles. I haven't stripped out any of the street requirements - still have lights and an instrument panel, but it's all stripped-out, stickered-up and loud as a semi. I fully expected to get pulled, but I have driven right past numerous officers w/out so much as a funny look. I try to keep the noise down and don't do anything stupid, of course, but I think maybe the novelty of a Volvo race car has something to do with it.
