I'm still sort of confused about gelcoat in regards to fiberglass repairs of the automotive type. I think I understand it for molds, but why would you need it for fiberglass that's been stripped down and repaired if you're only going to paint over it? Would an epoxy primer be an acceptable base layer after all fiberglass repairs are done?

I use standard high build primers either acrylic or enamel,  just match the primer to the paint you intend to use.  Test a bit to make sure your paint doesn't chemically react with your resin is the only concern I've ever heard.  I've also never had an issue.
