Wasn't sure if it was better to bump an old thread and start a new one. I have a couple knives and a leatherman with some surface rust. I was wondering if I could copy what is found in the link below to clean them. They are stainless steel.

Look at chromium 6 contanmination before you decide to do electrolytic rust removal on stainless. Chrome 6 is a very poisonous variety of chromium and it would be a shame to introduce more into the environment.

Rusty stainless steel? Must be made of 400 series SS - are they magnetic?

The leatherman is 420 HC Stainless I believe. Not sure about the Kershaw and Gerber. Yes they are magnetic.

+1000 why make poison? Go get some evap-o-rust and soakem over night stuff works great. I've used it in my Ducati gas tank as the shape did not leave a good way to use the electrolisis

try a harbor freight ultrasonic cleaner if your knives aren't too long to fit.
