Note that the $5500 cost for battery replacement is list price. Nissan negotiates all battery replacements, and often settles more like $1500.
I have seen them settle on $620.

In terms of future battery replacements, even if there are no drop-in replacements available, I'm sure there will be shops willing to replace the cells in your pack by hand. It's a roughly similar amount of work to an engine rebuild, you could do it at home.
In reply to GameboyRMH : electric forklifts normally have a cell or cells replaced in their batteries. It’s rare they replace the whole battery. I know off electric forklifts from the 1950’ s still in use with the original battery (Well, case anyway)
