And since it showed up in the same search as the picture above, how about a pre-Cherokee?
You know if this thing had box-flares, it would pretty much check all the boxes

I actually did stumble across one of these the other day and gave it some serious thought. http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/cto/2264562686.html

Another rarity but worth consideration.
I should just buy her a miata :)

This one. Great mileage and guaranteed to never get a speeding ticket.

New definition of the term "momentum car."
In reply to Junkyard_Dog:
I had a '87 Wagon w/ the woodgrain, one of my fav cars. Good DD, great in the winter, had a lot of fun in that car. I swear every other driver on the mountain owned one. Chicks liked it better than my Z-28, maybe 'cause they thought I was already domesticated. Another AMC wagon passed me one day sporting duals and a rumble, I had to follow it... the guy transplanted a 283 SBC in it.... sweet.
An X90 is fundamentally pretty similar to the Samurai. I had one for a long time and put an assload of miles on it. The only thing I ever replaced was the starter. The rear end started making noise at 275,000 miles and I ended up selling it .. for more than I paid for it. If you can get one without rust (mine was formerly a south Florida car), it's about as reliable as a hammer and handles just as good. A late model lowered X90 with the 16v engine would probably be a perfect starter car. Enough power to not be dangerous, 2 very tight seats so you won't have friends distracting you or hanky panky going on, and reasonable safety. I love it.
Much better than the 351C swapped Dodge A100 I started out with. 300+hp, manual brakes and steering, and no seat belts. (Until I swapped in some lap belts, ooh, that was safety.)

RAV4 manuals of that vintage you don't want. Trust me on that. They like to eat cats approximately every 25k miles, they like to shoot fireballs out the tailpipe and are a nightmare.
Amigo's/Rodeo's were decent new, but they did not hold up well over time.
My suggestion: Skip the Sidekick and go to it's successor, the Vitara. Better vehicle overall, better engine, better everything.
