Side note, excellent truck. I had a '90 exactly like that (only black) about 15 years ago. definitely one I wish I'd held on to.

I gave mine to my sister when I made the jump to a 4runner. Two years later she sold it without offering it back to me. I'd love to still have that truck.

My mom bought a 93 brand new. I told my parents that I wanted it if they ever decided to replace it. The sold it without asking me to someone who drove it for a year until the transmission crossmember broke and he sold it 10 hours away. I was so sad.

Judging by the past feedback I may be the only person on here to think this is super rad but I would love to have one of these. Turbo open top 4 Runner just like 1986? I hope these get made.

You are not alone.

That truck takes me back to the 1970's and 80's when people chopped the tops of cheap, small trucks in SoCal and it's land-locked suburb, Las Vegas, where my sister lived/lives.  I thought those trucks were cool, and this one brings back that vibe.  Thanks for posting.

Maverick AWD Hyrbid seems like the cheapest "trucklet" you can get with power to four wheels and still get decent MPG. So perhaps the cheapest in terms of cost of ownership.

The Frontier is the cheapest body-on-frame truck available.

The Gladiator 4xe looks interesting but I think many wish they'd offer the single cab with a longer bed. The bed on the Jeep's is kinda useless, but no more useless than the Maverick or 5ft options on the Tacoma. I think the cool thing about the Gladiator is there is some amount of modularity available.  See the Gladiator Overlook concept:

The Jeep Wrangler Overlook concept is the first three-row Wrangler.

As a 06 Limited Crew 4x4 Tundra owner with 225k, I've been pretty disappointed with what I've heard about the new Tundra. Even with the hybrid powertrain it get abysmal fuel efficiency. Is unreliable and the suspension still sucks. If I had to buy a full-size truck today I think I'd be looking real hard at a GM or Ford product. The ZR2 Silverado with 3.0l Duramax sounds like a great truck. The F150 is dialed, as always. Ram is slowly building a better truck around great engines.

The Tacoma seems to have quickly avoided some of the issues of the Tundra, but the turbo is no fuel sipper, the 6' bed is limiting in terms of options,. and it's still not a "small truck" in terms of price or size.

Good thing nobody is forcing me to a buy a new truck!

In reply to Racebrick :

How have you liked the Tacoma so far?

I've been looking at these a lot recently. I have a Maverick hybrid which suits my needs just fine but I'm kinda throwing around the idea of a little bit bigger truck. Plus I miss driving a manual. And having 4wd.

Ok team. Strongly considering a lease on an SR5. Does anyone know a good dealer in upstate ny? Also any insight on a fair price is appreciated.

In reply to Racebrick :

Any updates since you've had the truck for a bit?

I like the idea of a base, manual 4x4 but I'd like a 6' bed too. It's not a deal breaker though.

I read that Toyota expects less that a 2% take rate for manual Tacomas. I don't want a $50k TRD Pro so SR trim it is. Even the $36k-$40k is more than I'd like. It's a big jump from my ~$27k Maverick hybrid.

My unicorn is a manual SR in Supersonic Red. Toyota is building like one per month. Most of the aftermarket parts I've been looking at (suspension and exhaust) specify non leaf spring models which sucks.

I really wish I could find one locally to drive.

I really enjoyed the TRD Pro I had for a rental recently. With less interior and cargo space than my F150 and not that much better gas mileage I don't see myself ever buying one. It is tempting to have a manual pickup though and the turbo noises are fun.

I spent 2 weeks with a rental 2024 TRD 4x4 recently. It seemed very well built and definitely much more nimble than my F150.

Engine is not lacking in power once the boost hits, but it has a pretty agricultural character.

I was surprised it got slightly worse mileage than my 3.5 Ecoboost F150 typically does. The Distance to Empty when I filled up read ~230 miles. I actually googled it, and apparently it has an 18 or 19 gallon tank but the DTE meter assumes only 16 gallons. Still 230 miles for 16 gallons ain't great. Tank size would be pretty limiting if you use it for towing.

So I ended blessing one. SR5 from Fox Toyota in Auburn NY. Super pressed with the buying experience and their pricing. So leases and purchases are totally different so I will give my take on lease pricing because there was a lot of talk of price of a Tacoma versus an F150.
I got pricing from 4 dealers I also got pricing for F150's and rangers from 2 dealers. I also got pricing on a Frontier with a similar options.

The SR5 was about $100 cheaper than the frontier and it was 2-300 less than the F-150. It was ~ $150 less than the ranger. All prices are for the same lease term, same miles, same tax location and no funny business with trade in or any other variable. So from a lease payment standpoint the Tacoma was pretty favorable.

I love the turbo 4, it makes power at a low rpm so from 1500 rpm it pulls. It doesn't need to downshift to make power which makes it great to me. Also if you stand on it it's very snappy. It out accelerates my Escalade easily. The rear seat is a bit small but for my use case it's not an issue. so far my verdict is that it is a really good truck. Also for a daily I am a 2 pedal guy. The 8 speed auto seems really good. I'll know more when I bust out the camper from winter storage.

I have put 6k miles on mine. Its ok for what it is. Most of my complaints are more about new car "features." Rather than the truck itself. First gear is too short, and you can really feel that its leaf spring. I have done some towing, and its nice with my open trailer and a 3000lb car. Gets 20 mpg average with my use.
