This one is kind of interesting. This is the turbo out of a Subaru Outback XT.

It's a little hard to see it, but the compressor wheel blades are all missing.

We found this in the intake pipe.

Hmm. What IS that thing? A little shaft...threaded on the end. Wait a minute, it's REVERSE threaded. It's the shaft out of a previous turbocharger. Turns out the car had a replacement turbo installed at the dealer, and in that process the shaft apparently got left behind. To get sucked up by the NEW turbo, of course.

One night at work this happened. The big dent in the head above the broken valve is a hole in a coolant passage. It dumped about 50 gallons of coolant into the cylinder, hydrolocking it which necessitated changing the rod, bearings, piston, liner, head, pushrods, and rocker arms on that cylinder. Fun times.

That particular engine was a Superior 8GTLB. Looks like this

What can cause pads to wear like this? The rears on my 2002 WRX looked similar to this when i replaced therm not long ago, although not to that extent.

For some strange reason, 510 Datsun brake pads looked like this when new.

Hey! I have one of those. Mine has blades, but the shaft is snapped in half. 2005 Legacy GT. The turbo was a replacement installed by a Subaru dealer. It lasted 6000 miles.

I drove in to work on this. It exploded when I powershifted into 5th gear while trying to pass traffic. The direct cause was a piece of the 3-4 hub (the part that the shift collar rides on) broke off and got caught up in the gears. Ended up having to baby the car in 4th gear at "only" 80mph to not get in the way of the guy I just passed, with the car feeling like the world was coming to an end starting with the point a foot to the right of my legs.

I have... a lot of this type of photo. Not all of mine, there's interesting photos like that of a essentially zero-mile timing chain with many broken links.

Ooo, here's a new one from today. Subaru Legacy head. The dealership decided it was valve seals, and replaced some of those. For some reason, that didn't fix the running/misfire problem.

Two separate failures. The first was detailed on Pelican Parts. TT Coupler failure I believe and then it all went to hell as you can see.

The second, was from my buddy who bought a very nice 924S that didn't run. He repaired the wiring but found no compression in one cylinder. Pulled the motor (since he had a spare and wanted to reseal it) and found the broken oil pickup. So yeah, its a core block now.
