Yep Bertha the big red van died after tagging the semi on the way back from the Challenge last year. She was about Ohioed...errr I mean rusted away anyway.
Picked up a 97 Expedition with the 5.4 Triton and factory tow package today cheap.
I am back....................
I have a 2000 with the factory tow package and something called the HD option (so said the dealer) Great vehicle. Look for rust on the bottom of he doors and the rockers.
If the ABS lite comes on swap out the sensor in the rear diff. IT is a known problem. Less then $20 part and takes 10 min on your back under the vehicle.
Check the oil often when towing it will use it. As a DD it uses about a quart ever 3-4K
Also check the e-brake cable where it passes through the floor up by the firewall. The cable gets pelted by road debris from the front tire and fail quickly. I cut a piece of heater core hose length wise and slipped it over the e brake cable and zip tie it in place. Solves that problem.
Serpentine belt tensioners like to eat themselves (cheep easy fix) just keep an ear open for the telltale wining.
Let the dealer do the 100K service the spark plugs are a SOB.
Other than that this has been one of the better vehicles I have ever owned in terms of $$$$/mile.
My next project is replacement of the shocks.
Plugs and COP are a SOB, spent two hours doing number 7 today and its still not right, damn thing is right under the pressure regulator on the fuel rail.

Yep and if they brake or strip out the threads in the head you are SOL. Why I always let the dealer do them. (it is part of the 100K service) cost about $400 but it is the best $400 you will ever spend.
