Would anyone know if the Ford Cologne 2.8 V6 bell housing and four speed trans (from the Mustang II/Capri/TVR/Bronco) will bolt up to the 2.3 L4 of the same vintage and applications?

If not the bell housing, then what about the four speed? Would the one from the 2.8 fit up to the 2.3 bell housing?

Thanks,

TC

Transmission will, bell housing won't. Using my Capri knowledge for this question, so Type-9 four-speed is what I'm basing this on.

Iirc, different by a long shot.

What parts are you trying to put together? The Type E is the 4 speed version of the Type 9. Sometime called the Rocket. Sometime Quaife Rocket. The original gear boxes were from Ford of Germany (FOG).

When I tore apart a '77 Mustang II it had a what the MII guys called a RAD (Borg Warner SR4). It was the predecessor to the T-4 that lead to the infamous T-5. The bellhousing to gear box pattern should be close enough to match one bell to another Borg Warner box.

There is also a Type F (FOG) that came in the Capri II. It is a four speed that has side actuated shifters. It kind of looked like a mini Top Loader. This bellhousing should match up to a Type E and a Type 9 gearbox.

My 1977 Capri II had the 2.3 Lima (not pinto) and used the two lower bolts on the top for the bellhousing. See the eight chamfered holes: The upper two sets of holes are where some of the Lima bellhousing differ. The ones that came from European gear boxes (Ford Of Germany) use the two lower holes and all the gear boxes from else where seem to use the upper set of holes. The two 2.3 Lima's that I've had in my possession had all eight holes in their blocks.

The reason for the lower set of holes is so that it matches the Kent/Xflow/CVH/SPI/Zetec bellhousing bolt pattern.

Yeesh, I screwed up my Capri gearbox history, sorry. I meant Type-F; my 2600 powered Capri had that externally shifted four-speed.

Thanks gang!

I'll have to poke around an see if I can't locate an L4 bell housing an throw out bearing/arm assembly.

Not sure what four speed I have, but it has external shift arms and the shifter mechanism on top rather than most everything internal like on the T-5.

Post a picture. This is a Ford of Germany Type F:

I've got a Type E, bellhousing and a Zetec that all bolt together. The only thing I don't have is the flywheel that will fit. The one from the MII I pulled apart is too deep. But it could be shaved down I bet. I've been trying to sell it for a while.

Yup ! Looks like I presently have Type F (from Ford of Germany.)

Probably easiest shifter to source is going to be out of a Capri. Nice box, long shifter throws from the factory but not at all notchy. Team Blitz can help with hardware, although there may be other sources as well, I always just called Norm.
