The only time pit stop speed is interesting is when something goes wrong. Maybe we institute a minimum stop time of 5 or 10s, might allow the teams a little more ability to tweak the car's setup which is more interesting in the overall race than the difference between 1.9 and 2.1s.

The original question was do the teams need 14 people on a pit stop, and the answer is that under the current ruleset yes they do.  Any fewer means slower pit stops and thus losing positions in the race to teams that do have a full pit crew.

As for whether or not F1 needs to limit the number of people allowed to work on the car -- why?  The pit crew mechanics are the same mechanics who work on the car between sessions, it's not like they're getting paid just to do a half dozen 2 second pit stops per weekend.  Cutting down on them isn't going to save any money.

There's an aesthetic beauty to a properly executed F1 pit stop.  Flawless choreography, it's almost a dance, everything flows so smoothly and whoosh, the car is off again.  I like it.

As with many of these sorts of discussions, we already have a half dozen top level series with significant limits on how many people are allowed to work on the car during a pit stop.  Why do we need make F1 into yet another of them?  Can't we just let it work the way F1 has always worked even if that's different?

Huh? If there was a limit on the number of people allowed for a pit stop, it would mean all the teams have the same limitations.

How would there be a limit for the teams on the number pit crew members, but then some teams would have more?

The only thing I'd change in F1:

Every time RB wins they must transfer 1 hour of Adrian Newey useage to lowest ranked team.

And sprinklers.

I wasn't suggesting fewer people over the wall, I was suggesting a floor on pit stop time. It'll cut down on some costs on development for things like wheel nuts, and decrease the possibility of dumb things like nuts getting stuck. At 5s, they'd still have to work fast and smooth but it would be a little less frantic. Remember Bottas losing second place in Monaco a few years ago because of a rushed pit stop? That did not make the race better.

F1 has never just worked the way F1 always worked. Fueling, DRS, tire limitations, hybrids, even a required number of cylinders - there have been many changes over the years. A 1.9 second pit stop doesn't make F1 what it is. But it can take away from it.

In reply to Keith Tanner :

I'm not sure that it would really solve the "issues"- as the teams have managed to find ways to manipulate the stops to screw it up.  I get the idea that capping it at, say, 4 seconds would mean that teams would not have to optimize the nuts and whatnot.  But then someone will come up with the bright idea to gain performance some other way since speed isn't #1, and it will fail as it's being developed.

What I find interesting is teams spending their money to gain one second every 20 or so laps via the nuts but they are losing .5-1 sec every single lap thanks to the car being slow.  If it were me, I would not spend much money gaining a second on the stop and spend it all getting the car faster.

AI or the algorithms must be going crazy today, because my news feed was one after another, Newey leaving RB, Hulk going to Audi (this is probably the only realistic one), and Kimi A. is taking Logan's seat post Miami GP.

Yes, that's what I said.  Everyone is going to use as many people as they can unless there's a rule against it because doing otherwise is throwing away a competitive advantage.

Yes, but the way you worded was as though some teams wouldn't use as many as they could. Literally what you typed:

"Any fewer means slower pit stops and thus losing positions in the race to teams that do have a full pit crew."

There are no F1 teams that are going to use fewer than the allowed number of team members.

Newey leaving Red Bull.

Red Bull design chief Adrian Newey is to leave the team in the wake of the controversy involving allegations about team principal Christian Horner.

Newey, regarded as the greatest Formula 1 designer in history, has told Red Bull he wants to move on, BBC Sport has learned.

The 65-year-old has been unsettled by the situation at Red Bull since Horner was accused of sexual harassment and coercive, abusive behaviour by a female employee, which Horner denies.

I feel like the smart money is on him going to Ferrari, but my heart wants him to go to Andretti, as that would be the funniest outcome

Well, that escalated fast.  Given the lack of noise about it for a little while, I kind of thought that Horner and Red Bull (inc) was able to sweep it under the carpet.

I could see Newey enjoying the chance to do something with Honda at AM.

Or take on a challenge to get Williams back to the top.

What is different between this and the F1 app I've had for years?

Newey to Ferrari makes the most sense I think. Nice red bow on top to wrap up his amazing career, similar to what Hamilton is doing.

Or he could just retire from F1 altogether and do other stuff like road cars, e.g. Gordon Murray. He was also working on the RB17 hypercar project in addition to his F1 responsibilities. "Leaving the team" could simply mean leaving the F1 part of Red Bull.

I really hope Newey goes to Ferrari, designs them a championship winning F1 car then designs the next Ferrari supercar (F90?)

To be honest i'm not sure, from the article it sounds like much of the app's programming, just delayed by a day or so after the live event, and archived races and other assorted F1 related programming.

Dang the day delay sounds crazy. Who is a casual fan enough to wait a day after everybody has already seen it and rehashed it but would also pay for that?

It's supposed to be free on whatever streaming service it runs on (Pluto TV, Freevee, etc) so it's kind of like a Roku or Amazon Fire stick channel.  If you want premium (same-day) access you have to pay for it either through the F1 app or your local cable or pay streaming outlet like ESPN+ in the states.   Quote from the F1 article "Viewers will be able to tune in to exciting pre-scheduled programming 24/7, with race replays, detailed highlights, and expert analysis from the current F1, F2, F3 and F1 ACADEMY seasons added to the schedule five days after each event."

Good dangling carrot to get people to upgrade. I want to watch the sports event when everybody else does. If I purposely avoid checking anything until the next day when it's free, I know I'll see something that spoils it in the meantime.

I used to watch the Braves on a time delay when I got home from work in Alaska on the mlb app and without fail somebody would text me "man that's crazy they had a walk off" and I would just watch the highlights at that point when I got home.laugh
