You realize the too slow penalty has nothing to do with who was behind, or what they were doing right? Further, the location was dangerous.  To drive slow on the racing line is moronic for a rookie. He's no rookie.

The real problem with max's penalty is that it was his teams fault (presumably). Unless there is a highlight of him being told someone was coming up behind him, drivers have no idea if someone is coming up on them. Teams normally keep them well informed, it's pretty odd on RBR to miss that.

Not sure if completely agree. The steam should give him a heads up. Absolutely.  Built, in this instance he was on the racing line. At his speed, someone on a push lap could have easily had a nasty shunt. Just imagine,  as said earlier,  his reaction if rolls were reversed. As this is a safety issue,  a 3 spot penalty seems way too lenient, especially given his car's location.

Even Alonso agrees:

Regarding Verstappen's penalty in qualifying, Alonso had a good one: "If that's the case, I'll speed up towards my rival on my warm-up lap in Abu Dhabi and ask for him to be punished." (x.com)

Would you rather they add to the rulebook by factoring in if the car behind is on a flyer?  How about if it's the last turn before s/f versus turn two?

It seems pretty simple to me...  don't go at 1/10th, even if the car behind you is only going 1/2.

I think this thread and the F1 paddock all need a cool down period. The only thing left to fight for is Ferrari vs McLaren for the constructor. Max won, it's done (that is for George as much as this board). It sounds like everyone needs a winter break...

I am confused on why the penalties were seemingly so harsh this time around.

Max's 1 grid spot was a bit odd.

Norris's 10 second stop and go seemed absurd.

Some of the contact and pushing other drivers off received NO penalty.

I am glad they are enforcing the rules.  And, I'm glad the penalties are a bit more severe.  It just seems like it got ramped up in 1 race weekend (without notice?).

- Is this season being manipulated at the end so the constructors championship is undecided until the final race?

Doohan is un-officially going to take over for the last race for Ocon. Another Checo article today, that RB is mutually parting ways, so are they going to anounce it before or wait until after the last race?

Well, it has been a while since the "Ferarri International Assistance" backronym has been dusted off and put out there!

That whole situation that led to NOR's penalty is just so bizarre to me.  That mirror was sitting there forever with no decision from the race director on what to do about it.  Unless his decision was to just let it ride and hope everyone just left it alone.  And then when BOT moved to the side to obey the blue flags, it looked like he was aiming for it, almost!  I'm sure he really couldn't see it, but you'd think that there'd be some better instruction from the team as to where the debris was on the track and where to put yourself so you could avoid it.  It's not like he needed to pull out real fast to avoid a car that he was trying to outbrake or anything; that was a more planned-out move.  I don't think it was an intentional hit, but it was just weird.

Having a decently strong penalty for ignoring yellows is something that I'm in favor of - it's really a big safety item and if you let drivers push that rule, eventually they'll all start to push it and push it and push it some more to avoid getting caught out by someone who's willing to be more on the edge of the regulation than you are.  To be fair, I cannot remember the last yellow flag infringement in a race (I recall an incident in qualifying in... Mexico? a couple years ago), but I also cannot ever remember watching an F1 race where a driver got a stop-and-go.  So either this is a very sudden escalation in the stewarding or it's always been this way and the threat of the SNG has kept everyone in line.

What I'm really bummed about is Haas.  I don't know how Alpine suddenly has a car that wants to keep up with traffic, but I was hoping that Komatsu could bring in a nice haul of cash for the team with a 6th place finish.  Given that they need to outscore Alpine by 6 points in the next race to take the place back, I'm a little concerned for Alpine, but hopeful for Haas, that they're putting Doohan in Ocon's seat.

I'd love to see a 1 on 1 with him and Max in a Williams.  25 laps. 1 set of softs. I'd put money on Checo. McLaren, just like with Heikki, should have given him more of a chance.

Considering the recent history and budget for Haas, 7th is really impressive. But 6th would be pretty awesome for the smallest team on the grid.

At some point on a warm up or cool down lap, you are going to be on the racing line, as you transition from left turns to right turns.   George got his knickers in a twist because he didn't pay close enough attention to what was ahead of him.

Max was probably a bit wrong, but a wag of the finger and a "Tsk tsk" is about what that deserved.  turned out to be nothing, anyway.
