How do you guys prefer to be paid for a vehicle once you start shifting a few thousand dollars around?
Hopefully one of my fleet will be sold this weekend and I don't want to get burned on the deal. I was thinking of heading to the bank to have the buyer get a cashiers check in front of me instead of accepting the cash myself. This is partly complicated in that I am having my father sell the car, and then get with him later to pickup my loot as I am 400 mile away from him and the car.
Under $5000 I have always done cash. I have only sold one car where the buyer gave me a cashiers check, we went to the bank to have the title notarized and I deposited it right then.
I have only done transactions $2500 and under and it has always been cash

if you/your dad is afraid of getting burned on bogus cash, go to office max and grab one of those counterfeit pens for $5...

all kidding aside my last car I met the guy at a grocery store and then went 1 block away to Chase Bank. I gave him the title as he handed the teller the cash with my deposit slip. I then walked home.

This.
When I bought the ACR I was not comfortable flying a couple hours with $5k in cash on me, so I got approval from the seller to bring a cashier's check.
When we bought DD#1's Impreza, we took the train into DC carrying almost $6k in cash between us. That was probably (definitely) stupid, but it went OK.
Cash is king, though I have taken a check before. I held the title until I cashed the check.
That would require me to sell a vehicle.....
So far my string is unbroken.
Got paid $11,500 in cash. Took it to the dealer where I was buying my wife's next car and handed it to them for part of the down payment. Done.
Having just sold a car for several grand, I met the buyer at his credit union, and got cash. I needed it right away, instead of waiting for cashier's check to clear, to buy my truck.

Is that even legal anymore? I thought dealing with over $10k in cash was all sorts of legal berkeleyery now.

Cash is what I deal in if at all possible. Over 10k is legal but banks have to report it, so it's better to get like 9k out at a time.
I've flown with a little over 5k on me with no issues. Checked a firearm at the same time. Try not to look shady and things seem to go much smoother lol.
It sounds like docwyte let the dealer handle the large deposit.

Ever use one on a styrofoam cup?
Not a big deal. Any deposit of cash over $10k requires a you to fill out paperwork. I had to do the same with the dealer. I don't care. Cash is king and bank checks are a huge hassle now with the counterfeiting going on.
I wasn't worried about theft, just put it in the pocket of my cargo shorts. I never travel alone, my constant companion is Springfield Armory.
I always prefer cash. If a check is used, the vehicle is released after the check has officially cleared.
I sold my pickup in my driveway for 12.5, cash. It sucked counting all those twenties!
Took 6 to buy something else and dropped 6.5 at the bank. No issues.
bought our accord for a little over 5k... pulled out 7k and looked at a few cars and held it a few days until we found the car that met our needs... $2k stacks are much smaller than you would think...
but I could understand someone wanting to meet at the bank for the exchange... especially as the stacks get larger.
