OK, i have a 91 spirit R/T.

condition unknown. but i think i remember it had a spun rod bearing. oil pan is missing, timing belt is missing. thats how i got it.

what should i do with this car? its in rough shape complete, but its 20 years old.

can i use a normal turbo 2.2 or 2.5 bottom end? i know the heads are the tits. how much are they worth? should i part this one out? how does the trans hold up?

Nice car to pick up, the oil pan should be a "common" block unit so nothing to fear, the rest of the engine and head are T3 only so it will take some money to put it back together .

Some people have replaced the T3 with a regular T1/2 engine, computer and wiring and driven them. The (T3) trans will bolt up to the regular T1/2 and the 568 is very strong.

Good luck Paul B

Block is common 2.2 T2 stuff except for the pistons. Oil pump drive shafts like to break on them from a manufacturing defect.

Oil pan is common as well.

Trans is plenty stout (A-568), needs a limited slip to keep the diff from exploding if you do a lot of burnouts (OBX/Quaiffe/Phantom Grip). 1st gen Neon shifter bushings and short shifter can be adapted pretty easily. They are specifically modified from the factory for use with the TIII as they have the crank sensor mount fitted to them.

The engine is great, the rest of the car isn't as great. The Spirit is a nice comfy car, but it isn't a sports car. If the body/chassis is rough, I'd probably combine the drivetrain with another, smaller body, like say a Fiat X-1/9 or a Dodge Omni and put the motor in the rear. :)
