Let's get some of the bigger issues tackled first. Looks like the speed is way up. As our developed explained, the new site had to generate a ton of thumbnails and that sucked up more horsepower than expected. A bug--since fixed--also sapped some power. So, yes, there are a wrinkles, but they're being tackled. Thanks again for the patience and feedback.

I believe that's also on the to-do list.

David, I've said it a few times now, publicly and privately, and I'll say it again. It's solid work, and a good rollout, few bugs notwithstanding. These things are never easy, and attaboys (and gals) are in order.

new site looks ok, but I'd like to see the gray bars in between each post be a lot thinner. There's really no need for two inches of gray between every post. In some cases the gray section is bigger than the white section that the actual post is in. This just makes less posts per page. Would like to see the darker gray bar like 1/3rd as thick (not like it needs to be thick to show "votes" "quote" and "reply" buttons). And the light gray bar a bit smaller as well...

I agree the "Latest Topics", "Your Posts" and other buttons should be pinned to the top of the page, regardless of where you are.

I also really miss being able to manuver between the various topics. It is unnecessarily difficult when the old site made it very easy to switch between "grassroots" and "other"

Something I've always wanted was to have links in posts, when clicked on, open in a new window instead of using this one. That way I'm not taken away from this forum; usually what I'm opening is a link to a Craigslist ad or some other goofy thing that I only want to "be at" for a short amount of time.

I appreciate the work that this magazine and its staff puts into this forum, and I'm very glad to have this forum available to me. Many thanks!

Is there a way to improve the search "feature"? For example when I put in a car name I get a listing of rides. What I want is a listing of threads that I can study. The old search feature wasn't very good as it limited results to 20 yet I think this is a step backwards.

That said after days of using the new site I really love the look. Great work!

You can actually enable this feature in your profile. Just go to your user page and click "Edit Profile"... but the feature currently doesn't work (we're fixing it). All browsers let you do this manually, though: You can hold the Control key and click the link, and it'll take you to the link in a new tab.

Glad you like the site. Thank you. :)

We know the search feature is weak. We're working on it.

Regarding some other issues:

We're working on the sidebar render issue, but it's an elusive one to replicate. We'll get this sorted as soon as possible.

We're also working on making the subscription popup work properly on some of those Apple devices that are having trouble with it.

Long URL wrapping bug has been fixed.

Post preview text color has been changed. It's not red anymore. Those of you who turned post previews off, feel free to turn them back on if you want it.

Text size in the composition box will be tweaked. We'll move the Post button up to just below the composition box (next to the Preview pulldown).

I believe I already mentioned that we're working on a Forum Jump feature that'll let you zip from one thread to a completely different forum. This will also have a Latest Topics option so you can quickly move around how you like.

We're going to fix the "turn off signatures" feature.

Baxter, debug has been turned off.

We also have some of our own priorities that need fixing, like the banner ads at the top of the page. There are, in fact, many more fixes in progress than these. I appreciate your patience as we work through them.

I am getting 404's every now and then when I post a reply to a thread. The post seems to get posted about 1/2 the time if this happens.

I REALLY like the button placement. Having everything on the lower right is more in line with many other forums that I visit.

EDIT: I GOT a 404 when I posted this one. LOL

And again when I went to edit it. This is the error message.

magPopup { z-index: 50; font: 14px Prelude,arial,sans-serif; border-radius: 3px 3px 3px 3px; position: fixed; width: 300px; height: 215px; bottom: -300px; left: 9%; padding: 30px 20px; background: url("/static/images/universal/magpopup_bg.png") repeat scroll 0% 0% rgb(251, 251, 251); border: 1px solid rgb(160,160,160) ; } #magPopupLeft { width: 140px; float: left; } #magPopupLeftFrame { border: solid 1px rgb(224,224,224) ; padding: 10px 10px 10px 10px; } #magPopupRight { width: 145px; float: left; margin-left: 10px; } span.closer { position: absolute; top: -7px; right: -10px; width: 32px; height: 31px; background: url("/static/images/universal/subscribe_close_btn.png"); z-index: 50; }

We're also working on bringing back a "new thread" or "thread with new posts" visual distinction. It might not be a star, but there will be a way to tell.

As for the input boxes, this is what our developers tell us: "The text is so large in the various inputs on the site because if it's smaller than 16px, iOS devices will zoom in on them when you tap them, which is super distracting." The only other option is to disable all zooming on Android and iOS devices, which is a different hit to usability.
However, if you use Google Chrome for a browser, you can click and drag the bottom-right corner of the composition window and make it as big as you need. I personally use that feature all. the. time.

That's super useful, thank you. I'll pass that along.

What buttons do you mean that you like so much?

Alan, if your devs were using modernizr (and I'm really surprised that they're not), you could do something along the lines of...

input {
font-size: $baseFontSize;

.touch & { font-size: 16px; }
}

Although I suspect that's not really it. Given that people are describing it as "huge", while the spec'd difference is only 1px, I suspect some browsers are not rendering it as intended and have a much larger mismatch.

That makes me happy.

Still a big issue on Iphone...

There is a subscription popup window which floats into view annoyingly when scrolling, but never stays in view long enough to be legible.
