I just finished playing it for about an hour.
The good:
If you like GT it's still GT. This means I'll no doubt get plenty of play out of it.
The Bad:
It's not much improved from GT4. I haven't tried any of the premium cars/tracks yet but the standard stuff looks bad compared to Grid, Dirt 2, and others. I loved the menu system from GT4, not so much from this one. The loading times are also atrocious. Granted, I did opt out of the 8GB install which probably would have sped things up a bit.
I'm also sad it lacks the sense of speed games like Dirt have. Playing Dirt, I'm literally on the edge of my seat feeling constantly like I'm on the edge of control in the game. Playing GT I'm lounging in my chair.
It's still better than 95% of other console racers but I really expected more out of it.
Wow, glad I didn't go out and buy a PS3 solely for this game. From what I've been reading on various forums, it's a boatload of FAIL! I feel bad for all you guys that have been waiting for this game to come out for the past 5 years. You would think that with all that development time, the game would be damn near close to perfect. From what I've been reading, a lot of the issues that were problems with the past games are STILL problems in the new ones. That's ridiculous.
<<<< goes back to playing Forza 3....
Some observations:
Upon loading it, it immediately downloaded a 130 meg update! So much for final and perfect.
Load times are a bit slow, but not horrible.
Seems to handle pretty well with all the aids turned off. It's no Enthusia, but it can get you on the edge of you seat sometimes. The first thing I tried was a Cobra with all the aids turned off, it was not easy to drive at all. A mildly modified Europa on a twisty track can be quite exciting.
Online is a bit baffling at this point. You select a track and you drive on it. There doesn't appear to be any control over what types of cars run. I am not sure what the point is (this will be very disappointing if true), but I need to look into it further.
In car is interesting, they even have working wiper blades, but for some REALLY STRANGE reason the have the wiper blades UP when they are off, very irritating.
The "bump to turn" style of driving is still fully supported sadly.
Its not all "collect cars and run wildly over classed cars in races" though. In trying one the Top Gear Challenges, even the beginner one (VW combi van racing) is turning out to be quite challenging (it may be that I have all the aids turned off).
It is a bit hard to believe this took 5 plus years to develop though. Really, I don't give a s&*t if the cars are perfectly modeled!! It's not a freakin' car photo game, it's a racing game!!
I got my copy this afternoon but I had to go to work straight after I bought it. Don't know when I'm going to have time to play it.
Since I own two FC RX-7s, it will be interesting to compare how a Standard model FC and a Premium model FC behave compared to each other and to the real thing.
You guy's must have bought a different game than me. The driving physics are way ahead of gt4 (played that a couple hours last night just so I could get a good judge on whats different). Makes my old gt pro wheel feel like a brand new one. I've never played another game that the wheel felt better on.
The braking has been hugely upgraded from gt4 but not quite iracing quality. I don't know why they decided to make abs standard on every car though, and when you turn it off they have the braking force set evenly front and rear which sent me backwards into every corner and took me a while to figure out. At least they made the brake balance controller standard as well. I found I like the rear turned down to 2.
Other than not being able to change wheels on a standard car I really have no major complaints. Way better than I expected and far and away the best console game I've ever played.
P.S. I've never played Forza because I believe x box is of the devil.
is patiently waiting on his collector's edition to come from UPS. It is probably sitting about 30 minutes from my house but UPS won't deliver it until11/30. Thanks.
Yeah i've been playing for a good many hours now and I love it. My one complaint, though, besides not knowing how to use their whole format yet, is that some of the standard cars look like poor copy and pastes of GT4 cars, which really stands out next to the crazy awesome premium cars.
And burning rubber is WAY more fun in this game than previous ones.

If that was the case, you need to add the $700 TV to play it on and the $300 couch you will need to sit on to play it and the $20/month internet access to play online. ...
Well said, though I do agree that getting 30-40 variations of the same car is kinda lame. I'd love to see cars like Miata, Miata turbo, Datsun 280Z (stock and big turbo)... Early model Mustang and Camaro. Then again I don't know what they do have, but thanks to you guys, GT5 has been added to my wish list... along with a steering wheel.

For either the right or wrong reasons, your son's opinion of you just went through the roof.
So, you have to level up to unlock things like crash damage and tire wear? Who the Bob Costas makes a game like that?
Holy disappointment batman! The only time I was more sad was when I found out Santa wasn't real...
Disclaimer: I regularly play Forza 3 and now RFactor and Live for Speed. In essence, apparently I have been spoiled as car simulators go. I basically tried to compare this game to the current benchmark in console racing: Forza 3.
Graphics: Fantastic, tracks looks great, great variety. The premium cars look amazing. Also really cool to have some rare legends, the motul mugen 87 civic, spoon crz, mugen spoon hondas, older gt race cars, F40...etc. On the other hand the standard ones do look seriously out of place, kind of unfortunate. I would have rather had 400-500 fully developed cars than 200 developed and 800 half ass ports... Seems like poly count on the standard cars is seriously lacking. Not to mention you pretty much cannot even change the wheels for them. Really?!
Smoke looks amazing. Took the AEM S2000 through special stage 5, got sideways quite a bit. Looks gorgeous. Weather effects are really cool too.
Damage Model: What a joke. I dont even want to get into it. The preview videos made it look like your hood and doors would be flying. Again spoiled by Forza 3...
Content: Leader in its class. Sheer amount of cars and tracks is great.
Tuning: So so. I found the levels of suspension adjustment to be lacking. "Racing Modification", I really though they would allow this to be more of a part by part ordeal by now. Again, I prefer Forza's system. I like choosing wheels, changing diameter, choosing different tire widths on front/rear... Being able to install a roll cage and weight reduction without "racing modification", swapping engines.
Gameplay: This is a tough one. I can tell they tried to polish this. Unfortunately I did not see too much innovation. There is no classing system, just "Restrictions". Same formula as before: do licenses, buy a faster car, race, win with no effort, collect money, fill garage. AI is pretty poor. I wish the rally had a bit more open environments, less of the solid walls. Somewhere between "Dirt" and "GT4". Again, just feels like an updated game, rather than something truly new and innovative. However I it still rewards you for taking proper lines, braking technique. I found the controller to be more sensitive than the Xbox one, with Forza I would often trail brake and balance the car midcorner with partial throttle. Found this harder in this game.
This game, honestly does not feel like the 5-20 years or whatever they sunk into it. Im not a fanboy but seriously did they even try Forza before they approved this to be sold. The one thing that mattered to me, the one thing: physics and driving dynamics. Complete fail. This felt like a more polished GT4 than anything. In GT4 it was impossible to get the rear wheels to spin unless you had 800hp and were stupid with the car, in this game, while easier, still does not feel as organic as Forza. It still feels too fixed, too planted. At least you can do donuts in this one, unlike GT4.
In Forza I had some truly close racing even with the AI. You really have to work for it, especially when doing the later A class races against the computer Z06, which was brutally fast. Or some of the GT3, Australian V8 racing...
6/10
Im going to give it more time, maybe it will grow on me. Or maybe wait for Forza 4... (While playing RFactor  )
File me in with all the other very disappointed Gran Turismo fans. It takes a lot of work to screw up a game that bad. All they had to do was take GT4, add more cars, add more tracks, and up the graphics to PS3 standards. They really dropped the ball on this one. The car setup screen is lousy. The selection of tracks is pretty dismal. The amount of races is minimal. I'm already 40% into it with a driver level of 15. The game is not getting any better. My B spec drivers are morons. Who brakes in the turns on Daytona's super speedway? Game is bad enough, I'd like to mail it back and tell them keep working on it.

Wait until you see them braking while tracking out on corner exit... Taking you out in the processes.

Whoa, waitaminnit...I'm used to them slamming on the brakes at the apex, but now they're doing it on the exit?
I am unimpressed. It took over an hour from breaking the wrapper to actually being able to see it, and then it seems their servers were down and we have to wait for their timeout. Heaven forbid you return to the main menu at any time you can't contact the servers, because then you have to wait for the timeout all over again.
I must not have seen enough of it to think the graphics are super amazing. The menu structure is terrible. The car selection is terrible. The track selection is terrible. The opening movie is absolutely uninspired and does nothing at all to make me want to endure the agonizing wait times until it loads everything. Every time I do pretty much anything, I have to wait it load, re-load, and say "Installing". Isn't that why I devoted nearly 10 gigabytes of hard drive space to this game, so it wouldn't have to do all of that?
Ugh. $68 I really wish I could get back.
Not really impressed with graphics or gameplay. Forza 3 still has the edge on this one. I feel like I'm playing an upgraded GT4 and not something cutting edge. The $64.40 (or whatever it was after taxes) could have went towards this 6.0L LQ9 i just purchased today instead.
I decided to fire it up again and now I have ANOTHER software upgrade it forces me to install. I am seriously considering disabling the network connection whenever I play this awful game.

Hated it enough to play it to level 15 and get almost halfway through it after only being released a couple days, eh? Hmmm...
Call me crazy, but I've been enjoying it so far. Is it perfect, no, but still a great effort, in my opinion.
It's a horrible effort for a six year project. Hell, most of the cars were just taken from the other games they've done! Seems like they took a five year vacation on Sony's dime!
I'm enjoying it so far overall, but it's far from perfect.
Good: Physics are much improved over GT4 where everything just pushed like crazy and sucked all the fun out of the whole experience. Graphics, for the most part, are great. I don't mind the menu system. It's GT, I've always enjoyed this series.
Bad: Updates and updates. Was playing last night, finished a race, then it locked up. After 5 minutes I gave up and went back to the main PS3 screen and restarted the game. At which point it spent 20 minutes downloading and installing an update. Not good. The AI cars still drive like idiots, as with previous versions of this game.
Overall, I'm enjoying it and will probably play it for a while. But I seriously wonder what the heck took so long. It's not that revolutionary. It's GT4 with better graphics and less understeer.
