I keep seeing this car....hasn't move in the last year.
GT6+... can see through rear hatch to axle body exterior seems solid, but surface rust and an extremely bad paint job (brush)
interior is there....sorta.
what would be a fair price? it has a very faded "for sale" sign in.
btw.....sitting right next to a hard top spitfire with a similar sign

Even if I'm thinking LSx or Ecotech power? I'm not a purist
biggest problem to look for is floorboard rust and rockers. If it's a northern car, the entire bottom of the tub is probably rusted out, not just the floorboards....I don't see that as a terrible deal if the drivetrain is good (especially if it's an O/D car) and depending on condition of the interior, though. I'd offer half and see where it goes. Rusted floorboards and rockers are easily replaced with fiberglass if you don't care about originality, and a so-so bodied and rattle-canned GT6 looks better than alot of cars in mint condition.
mine before and after, for reference. Alot of fiberglass and rattle-can matte black....
IMO the +/Mk2 are the best looking, fastest, and best-handling of the GT6s (not that that's saying all too much, lol)
And few cars are easier to work on...
Maybe $2500 later, at most.....with rattle-can black and bodywork that looks fine from 10 feet away, lol..
Whats that stuff about DejaVu all over again.....(?)
My "Spitfire" was purchased as a GT6 25+ years ago. None of the body electrics worked. The clutch was just strong enuf to motor around at 25 MPH.
The asking price was $1500 and the guy made it clear that he was open to ANY offers. I offered $500 (too much) and he snapped it up.
I peddled the motor and tranny to the members of the local TR club for $350 and the rest is history.
Rust is the only thing that can tank your project...IMO
Good luck,
Rog
Irish44, it isn't polite to post such pornography on a board like this! I won't be able to focus all day now. That thing is AMAZING!!

lol thanks....lots of fiberglass, non-original parts, shoddy bodywork, ill-fitting panels, vibrations, and rattle-can paint job - yep, it fits in alot better on the GRM forum than on the Classic Motorsports forum, where it's probably seen as a bastard child
one more for you and to motivate the OP to GET IT. My crappy interior but nice new dash

that is seriously an amazing looking car dude.
to the OP: GET THAT GT6+!
Irish I have to second that, I spotted your car in the readers rides section a while back. Its a seriously cool looking car.
It put the GT6 on my radar, I had previously had no idea they were that cool.
I have to wonder if a GT6 with the engine and drivetrain from a miata would be faster and handle better?

um...how about YES.
The GT6 I-6 weighs about 450lbs and the front 1/3 of it sits forward of the front wheels. Needless to say, weight distro is not great, especially with a super-light rear end. I plan to get a lighter alternator, move battery to behind the passenger seat, and get a lightweight aluminum radiator (cheap race radiators from early 90s civics on ebay are almost a perfect fit, actually!). Removing the heavy front chrome bumper also helped.
I don't recall seeing any Miata swaps, but quite a few rotary GT6s out there, and a handful of Rover 6 and 8 swaps as well. LS would be nice too... LIghter engines that can sit farther back in the bay (like a rotary) are the best bet for handling (the spitfire, which the GT6 was based on, had a small 4-cyl and had something like 51/49 distro.
Keep in mind that the GT6 tranny and diff are fine for near-stock power, but can't handle more than about 150 at the crank reliably (if that)....
People who want better handling but original engine...a few have flipped the suspension towers (whcih double as engine mounts) and moved the lump back about 6" and gotten very decent distro, but that does involve cutting the firewall a bit, shortening the driveshaft, and modifying the shifter assembly.
You can overcome alot of that the way I have: - fat front swaybar - stiffer front springs, lowered about 1" - and my favorite - wheel stagger. I run about 15mm different offset front and rear, with the rears sitting out further. This REALLY settled the rear end down a good bit, plus it gives you room for a bit fatter tires in the rear than with original offset. I'm running 14x6 superlites with 185s (155s are stock).
Anyhow, there are a few decent GT6 forums out there, and a number of guys who race them out west (Steve Smith and Steve Downing come to mind). And a surprising amount of aftermarket support if you dont' mind ordering from the UK.
ok, diarreah of the mouth over....
here are a couple other GT6s to keep your interest
how very Grassroots. I actually have some suspicion that this car is the one I had as a parts car a few years ago, due to replaced right rear wing and a few other details that make me think that it used to be a track car - plus the color, which I don't think was standard. Was a total rust0bucket though, and after full strip it got the sawzall, sadly.

Grtechguy wrote: well I was thinking it was a $300 car tops, not the $1500 he's asking. go ahead.
Meh, offer him $800 and see what happens. For that price, even if you hate the car you could easily recoup the money selling the drivetrain and certain parts that are in demand.
On a side note, I'm about to do a CV rear axle conversion on mine, so I'll have some nicely redone rear rotoflex axles available this summer....and if that car has been sitting a long time, you'll definitely need to replace the rotoflex donuts.
Ok, one last pic for now. Note that two people can pretty easily lift the body off the car, so you can more easily do floorpan rust, chassis repairs, etc...
and here's another local guy. Gene's car is quite original and quite nice. It does have an old-school Lucas FI setup in place of the carbs (I have SU 1.75s with bored manifold), so he has more power than me (and I have more than stock). Actually, those are my carbs sitting in the back of his car, lol
Hey irish44j - Wait a minute! That tan, the stylish outfit, the professional car preperation, the no trash pickup on the rock hard slicks - why that must be ME!!!!
Down hill right hander at Lime Rock
The car did run again.
The hood, door and drivetrain still survive on my Spitsix.
Had the body hauled off from my rented garage in South Jersey a loooong time ago. Scott

yeah, it's a really good build, it's a shame he had to make the car look so stupid with those big-ass wheels.....wtf.

Irish, stop it. You make me want mine back (and I even think I know where it is..).
