I got no help for you. I have the same kind of thoughts every time I drive my wife's 4Runner. And that would take a lot more work. Your project sounds down right reasonable!

I have the same thoughts on ANY car I own. Luckily I have no money to do anything and then I realize I will probably sell the car soon.

You seem to realize you'll be polishing a turd.

You also realize that you'll have a fun, capable daily driver that is also a semi-sleeper, since it is a turd.

In addition, you suspect you'll have a car that can probably go for another 200k miles. Even if the engine throws a rod, used ones seem to be going for $600 bucks on car-part.com Yes, I looked. You begin to realize that having a turd can be cheap and fun.

You tell your wife that you want to buy a brand new BMW 5 series, and you continue talking that up for several weeks. They're only $75k, you'll say. Maintenance is free for the first few years, and shouldn't run more than 4k a year after that, you'll posit.

Then you say to your wife, "Or we could just fix up that Hyundai for about $2000 and drive it for another 10 years."

The next thing you know, you'll be out in your garage, polishing a turd that just might not stink.

How mechanically inclined is the wife? You dont have to go and blow up that motor at all. You just tell her she's got a good ear for noticing all those bad noises and that engine is on it's way out. You dont want to risk her breaking down in it so "here honey, you take my car and I'll drive this one until I have time to replace the engine in the spring"

You praise her keen skills in identifying a problem, you gallantly take the risky car and give her the good one, you're a hero and hero's deserve suspension mods.

Done.

It is... but if you guys all start doing it than the prices are going to go up and I won't be able to!

Oh god... what have I started here?

For you power hungry people... the Beta likes boost. about 12-15psi gets this car upwards of 240whp...and when stuffed in the light Accent with the aller gearing it would be REALLY hard to not light the tires on every start.

You'd best get your ass in gear.

If you'd like, i'll distract them with discussion of a 4g63T-powered Hyundai Excel?

PS: What's the limits for a stock Beta under boost?

Without popping the engine open about 15-18psi reliably. anything more and the stock 10.1:1 compression starts to work against you. 1.8L pistons will lower compression down to about 8.8:1 and it'll take 25psi all day. Best halfway built Beta I've seen to date was sitting at 315whp with cams, 1.8 pistons and a standalone.

The major limiting factor in the beta comes down to the cams. Since the car is a ULEV engine, and it is running no EGR at all, the cams have such a high overlap to simulate EGR that performance gains N/A are severely limited. A good set of cams, proper ECU and header could easily put this engine into 170whp N/A territory from the 118-120whp they come stock with.

C4 ----> <---- Hyundai: Merge the two cars. A channeled V8 RWD Hyundai with forged aluminum control arms would be perfect. Dis-assembling the two cars is the only difficult part of the process. The remaining merge/purge is a piece of cake. Don't forget the box flares.

Who grinds cams for this motor, and when you say "proper ECU", does that mean a standalone or is there another option?

An Accent with a cam and ITBs sounds like a guilty pleasure in the making, and strangely more appealing than a homebrew turbo. (I've been spoiled by the near perfection of the Flyin' Miata stuff.)

Ah... power numbers were what i needed... psi doesn't mean much at all.

Halfway built gets 315whp, huh? So i'm guessing 250whp is pushing it with a stock motor.

I don't remember who grinds them anymore. I'd have to go digging. And yes, a standalone would be preferential. Outside of the Korean homeland no one really has the code cracked on the Hyundai ECU's. Sadly....

OB: 250whp would be a reliable stock engine.

i just meant trying to find someone to sell something with a decent beta 2 or the like in it lol. dunno how much replacement engines are but turbo beta 2's turn out pretty well from all I've seen on streetkiaz hard to find spec 5's in budget, and the elantras are up there around here too rio's are close around budget though, but would have to buy an old one and drop a beta 2 or something into it. that delta 2.7 from the v6 tib with a rwd converted rio would be phenomenal though lol, or a hot hatch rwd delta
