So, i know im close, but not close enough.
Driveshaft is from a 99 ford explorer 4wd. The u joint in it is the correct width and diameter for the driveshaft end.
Transmission is from a late 60s or early 70s ford long bed truck with a fixed yoke. The explorer u joint is the right diameter for that end, based upon my micrometer.
The cross shaft length is wrong though. The fixed yoke in the transmission has two little nubs cast in where the u joint should rest in between them. The explorer u joint rests on top of the nubs, thereby having no real way of locating center.
What i need is a u joint with the explorer size on all 4 caps, explorer spacing on one cross, and a 1/4 inch shorter or so spacing on the other.
I have never had any luck with u joints, either in finding the stock ones or mix and match. So hopefully yall can point me to the right one.
There's a good change the u-joints in the driveshaft now are 1330s. If they are, a 1310 has the same cap size but shorter cross pieces. They make a 1310 - 1330 conversion joint which would probably be what you'd need.
My research shows it to be a moog 353 joint

Which is a 1310-1330 conversion joint, for anyone who's wondering. But IMO, don't buy the Moog joint. Buy a proper Spicer joint if available, and stick to non-greasable u-joints (they have better seals, so they last about as long and they're slightly stronger due to not having grease passages drilled through the cross piece).
So the moog 353 is the size i want? Just want to make sure im following correctly.
And got you on non greasable. Dont want to shatter a u joint in the front of the shaft.
Looking at the specs of stock vs moog 353, it looks spot on! Ill grab one at the parts store and try it.
