The gearbox in question is from a 71 Capri with a 2 liter
The manual refers to it as a manual four speed, no other info.
It is a side loader four speed and looks a lot like the Dagenham used in early 60's ford 6 cylinder cars but it isn't.
What is this thing called? It isn't a Type 2, Type E or Type 3. I just need to find some synchros and sliders for it. 3rd and 4th are shot.
Oh hive mind of GRM, I beseech thee. Of all forums this should be right in our wheelhouse.
Or by the looks of the Burton's website and how often the Type F and Rocket box is labeled on the parts, try Taylor Race Engineering. They have Rocket parts, maybe they'll know the differences.
I think that bellhousing will also bolt up to a Type 9, the five speed from the XR4Ti. I bought a Type E to replace the Type F in my old Capri. Never got around to it, and sold the car.
Great info! All of the pics of Type F that I found were top loaders but this
Is definitely it.
No sliders at burton though
Contacted Norm. He has cores.
This is in a SOVREN vintage racer Capri here in the northwest. The owner would like to upgrade to a 5spd but wants it to be an easy bolt in swap.
off to do more research.
I think (key phrase here) that the bellhousing to gearbox bolt pattern is the same as a Type 9 in an XR4ti. It is on the Type E, which I have at home. Post the dimensions of the bell to box bolts.
Even if it's not, the Type 9 came in capris in europe in the '80s.
Did you ask Norm about this? I know he's worked on this sort of thing in the past, he's good to talk to, I haven't spoken to him in years but he's pretty good about telling you anything and everything you want to know once you get him on the phone.
What Norm said about the 5 speed swap was this
Team Blitz said: There are 2 sort-of easy ways to go 5spd. One, get a T5 from a 2.3L Ford car and adapt the bellhousing, starter, clutch parts, etc. The other, get a T9 from Europe, except the shipping is terrible. So, those are 2 routes you can go if the budget affords. The T5 has a weak 5th gear. The T9 has the same internals as the Type F, except for the overdrive. So, they aren't bullet-proof anyway. Flip a coin!
The Type 9 from Europe is the same as the Type 9 in the XR4Ti. I believe, the input shaft is longer on the Merkur's, but you can grind down the small amount. Or Tyalor Race has parts available on their website under Quaife Sierra gearbox.
Sierra RS Cosworth used a T5, wouldn't that be useful here, for sourcing a bellhousing that mates the T5 to a Pinto block? I'm not saying RS Cosworth bellhousing bits grow on trees in the USA, but there may be something aftermarket available... probably still have to mod the input shaft or some other thing like that.
